    Stupid mistake on application

I screwed up. I have been given an interview date for my CCW and just looked over my original application. Having lived a blameless life, I checked No on all the questions regarding infractions, criminal history, drug use etc., and now see that I had also checked No on the question about restraining orders. In fact I had a temporary restraining order filed against me over 20 years ago by a vindictive ex-wife after she sent her current husband to my house to beat me up and it didn?t work out as he planned. It was quickly dismissed by the judge as having no basis, and just as quickly dismissed in my mind as just one more in a long history of unpleasantness from the ex-wife.

According to Mr. Google, TRO?s leave no record once dismissed but should I tell the interviewer about my oversight? Wait to see if he brings it up?

Absolutely tell the investigator. Don't want to be denied because they want to say you lied on your application (good moral character issue)

I would call the IA immediately and explain you reviewed your application and noticed the error. You don't want it to appear that you were hiding ANYTHING from them.

On my initial application, I said I had not been involved in a lawsuit (ever) in the last 5 years. I got called out on that during my interview because, divorce is a lawsuit.

Don't lose any sleep; that's one of the main reasons for the interview is to clear-up/verify/amend any statements you have made it filling out the form.

Calling them in advance or e-mailing would be good.

          Lied gets one denied.

Anything you think might be hidden most likely will be visible in the background check, no matter what you hope/believe/feel/pray for.

You need to get the record straight either before or at the interview....if you get that far. The IA interviewer will likely be of the mind that one would never forget about a restraining order and it missing on the app is being evasive.

Be honest, eat crow, and get the RO disclosed even if you were in diapers when it was issued. And leave out the tough guy bravado about the ex's BF.

Presuming your IA is using Permitium, you can add a document to your file explaining the change to the question answered and providing the necessary information. Don't write a book, just the facts, Man.

Just bring it up, off the bat, during the interview. The interviewer will give you specific instructions on what to do to clear it up. It?s not a big deal.

This is what happened with my application. I unknowingly omitted that I had a misdemeanor conviction that I thought was a traffic violation, 20 years ago. It was a speed contest conviction with only citation and no arrest; just like any typical traffic citation. As a matter of fact, I didn?t even know that it was something I had to disclose, until I was asked by the interviewer a few times ending with ??this is your last chance to disclose anything in your background check.? Then I finally remember the incident and asked the interviewer and she said ?exactly!? She mentioned that it wasn?t a big deal if I had disclosed it, but if I didn?t disclose that at all, it would have been a problem.

If your IA uses Permitium, it's a good idea to upload a copy of the dismissal order along with a short note as suggested above.

Once you get to the interview the LEO will review your application. At that point bring up your error and refer him/her to your document.

When I did my application, I neglected to put the model number for one the weapons I wanted on my permit. I notified the interviewer, and he changed it right then. Easy-Peasy.

During the interview, the first and last questions they asked me were if I needed to make any changes to the original application. I had an accidental omission on the original application, but brought all the relevant docs and fully disclosed. I picked up my permit last month, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I had the same thing OP, not the omission but an actual arrest from my ex lying about me assaulting her in 1988. It was completely dropped/erased/eliminated...

I told the IA about it up front and we talked for a sec on the matter and he just said "this happens all the time" and thanked me for disclosing it. He already knew everything about me by the time the interview came up, so make sure this is the one and only thing you forgot about.

Just explain it to the investigator that you said no on the application because a judge already determined that the TRO was tossed out. A TRO application is not the same thing as one put in force by a judge.

I had a similar situation many years ago. I ended up arrested after getting in fight. Well, actually the facts were that I was defending myself, but since I won the fight (a "two hitter--- you know, him on the ground). The guy's wife called the police and the officer decided to arrest me. It was never filed as a criminal charge; detectives quickly determined I was not the aggressor. So, I then petitioned the local court to seal the arrest--- it was expunged from my record on a factual finding. The law then allows me to say I was never arrested.

Do not wait to bring it up. The first words out of your mouth after "nice to meet you" should be "I messed up on the application"

I had a psycho ex girlfriend that said insane things to the police department. This was a very long time ago. It did not come up in my interview.
