When carrying at work goes wrong

Lessons from the dark side, lot's of food for thought re: carrying against policy...

Biggest lesson IMO is don't discuss guns at work. Don't be the gun guy. And don't crack jokes about guns, there is a Karen around every corner.

if that's the case he probably shouldn't be running a firearms focused YouTube channel where he does nothing to obscure his identity when YouTube is just a side gig that doesn't pay the bills..............if he was immediately kicked off the premises then fired within 1 hour it was not a "don't ask don't tell" firearms policy, it was clearly written out somewhere. Finally he was only jobless for a year because he turned down job offers. And refused to look outside his field. If you are jobless with a family to support you are not "better than that" and don't have the privilege to say "I don't want no part of what they do". You need to provide for your family, you take what you can get then climb the ladder again.

      What a tool.
Politicians should only be allowed one term in office, then one term in jail.

Every monetized Uboobtube channel needs something to make people watch their VLOG.

"I got made at work and then fired because of it!!!!" seems to have worked in this case.
        Some random thoughts:

Somebody's gotta be the mole so it might as well be me. Seems to be working so far.

          This guy screwed up.

You need to be aware of your environment. This is true walking down the sidewalk. This is equally true in your career too.

His company got bought out by a larger company and started putting in rules against guns, which are totally universal among large corporations, and he broke those rules.

Don't like American corporate culture? Live according to your values in your own life and lead by example. Vote. But follow the rules in the corporate office.

Situational awareness... it applies in the parking garage. It applies in your career.

How was his property and self allowed to be searched? I wonder if he has talked to a lawyer..

seeing as how this happened over a year ago, its a little late for a lawyer.

I think this guy was brave to tell his story. I did increase the playback speed to 1.75 because he talks so slow. I think there is a lot that could be discussed from this video.

                      1) Like others said, it is wise to avoid talking about guns at work these days. Heck, I avoid talking about women, fashion, gender issues, politics, religion, guns, money, or any kind of gossip. Rarely do I even comment on anything that is not directly work-related. Posting anything on social media or YouTube is risky. The OP is right - there is a Karen around every corner!

                      2) I think that in California an employee can quit with or without any reason and can be fired with or without any reason at any time. But I doubt that an employer can legally body search an employee like that. Please comment on this if you know the law in California. If he suspected that he was going to be fired anyway, he could have refused the body search and at least preserved his dignity.

                      3) This is a good reason to live well within your means and have savings for financial emergencies like this. Also a good idea to have a second stream of income to fall back on. If you have high enough job skills to be choosey, avoid working for businesses like this. Also a good reason to maybe start your own business instead of being reliant on these increasingly tyrannical corporations.

I don't think we should judge the guy in the video harshly. Many people on Calguns could have this sort of thing happen.

I couldn't make it through he entire video with the slow story and drinking content. I don't have any objection to drinking, I just thought it was weird to have to have his drink while telling his story. I feel sorry for him but I don't think I would have agreed to the search from non-law enforcement. It may not have changed any of the results, but don't just give up your rights.

JFC I almost had to turn it off 30 seconds in with the overly dramatic drinking and slow talk nonsense. I get it that the point of this video is to get views, but give me a break.

The moral of this story isn't "Don't carry at work" - its "Don't do <literally anything at all to get fired> and not have a back up plan or a way to quickly bounce back. This guy could have been fired for telling a joke that was deemed sexist and been in the exact same position: Got fired, couldn't find a new job for a year, had money troubles.

The overly dramatic video is just silly. So was talking about guns at work, which is right up there with telling inappropriate jokes, stealing from the copy room, etc, etc etc.. all things that will get your fired and should be avoided. Concealed means concealed.. which also means keeping your mouth shut.

Sometimes other people who are gun friendly will however make themselves known and you can get an idea just how into it they are and to what extent you feel safe to share. I keep politics and gun ownership and permit info about me to myself 99% of the time though, and if I do share it's usually the minimum necessary info, with the last thing I'd be likely to share being that I had a permit. These are highly politicized times. I'm not even a conservative or a democrat really for that matter, though I tend to lean left on many issues. If I tell someone I carry, they are going to assume things about my opinions and views that could be far from the truth, and harmful for my career.
