Middle name required on CCW permit?

Is it a DOJ or legal requirement to have your middle name on the CCW permit?

I have a Solano County CCW permit and was at the Bass Pro in Rocklin recently with my 11 year old son. He recently passed his hunter safety course and will be hunting with me next season after he turns 12. I've been looking for a rifle for him for a while and found one at Bass Pro we liked. Decided to get it and presented my CCW permit for use to do the DROS in lieu of the FSC or hunting license.

After about an hour waiting to do my DROS (that alone was ridiculous) I get the mgr of the gun depot come up to me and tell me we have "a big problem". He informs me that my CCW is not valid, DOJ won't honor it and that I shouldn't even be carrying. I ask why and he says because the permit doesn't have my middle name on it like my drivers license does and therefore isn't valid. Told him I've purchased many firearms before using the CCW permit and no one has ever brought this up or questioned it and that the permit is filled out by the Solano County sheriff dept and not me, so why would they issue a non valid permit? He told me he's a retired cop and wouldn't let it slide when he was a cop as well as now and that DOJ and ATF would agree with him. I'm more than perturbed at this point but want the gun, so I have Bass Pro print out a duplicate copy of my hunter license (paid another $15 for that) and use that instead. Took almost 2 hours to get my paperwork done from the time I paid for the rifle. Was very frustrating.

Has anyone else ever come across this? And yes, I plan on emailing the Solano Sheriff dept to ask about this but want to arm myself with a little more info before doing so.

Rule 1, never believe anything a Bass Pro employee says in regards to the law. It's my experience that they don't know squat.

I was turned away from BP trying to do a PPT (the buyers choice of location, not mine) because I presented my license and CCW permit and they told me I couldn't use the CCW as a form of proof of residency AND as a substitute for the FSC. Ended up doing the transfer at a local gun store and they confirmed that the BP guy didn't know what he was talking about.

the reason for desiring a license to carry the weapon,

and shall, in addition, contain a description of the weapon or weapons authorized to be carried, giving the name of the manufacturer, the serial number, and the caliber. The license issued to the licensee may be laminated.

Nothing in there about 'matches CA ID/DL'.

I don't have a middle name. My CCW does not even show "NMN" on it. Just my first and last name. No one has questioned it and it has been accepted a proof of residence and in place of the FSC at several places.

I have yet to see Bass Pro take less than an hour to do anything in the gun department. I did a PPT there (once - seller's choice, not mine) and they refused to do it at first since his FSC had expired. He had to take the test again so I could buy the gun.

The second, and last time, was drosing 4 long guns I won at an NRA dinner. My wife was in tears waiting. Took easily 4 hours with the clerks running to the back and out, then back and out, just to have some wizard in back approve their paperwork. Never again.

But you still bought the rifle, so I guess you're happy - and so are they. Good hunting with your son!

Yeah, the guy was jokingly bragging that when he was an officer he busted people for this if they were getting "mouthy" (his words) and that I should be careful because if I ran into a younger officer without that much experience they'd likely bust me for it too. I had to bite my tongue in not responding.....

I figured that the guy was full of sh*t and this was all BS. This is the first (and last time) I've purchased a firearm at Bass Pro.

I had this BS pulled by another retailer because my DL didn't have the "Jr." on it which was reflected on the CCW. I pointed out that, to get the CCW, I had to submit my DL and two other proofs to the Sheriff before issuance. Based on that, it was my opinion that the Sheriff didn't think the CCW was invalid.

A discussion ensued, and I asked the manager to please show me the DoJ directive which requires this.

The transaction moved forward without further discussion.

Of course, I wasn't confronted by a self-important ex-LEO wasting my time telling me what he would do if he was still on the force.

I quickly realized that continuing to argue with the manager there was like wrestling a pig in mud....after a while you figure out they like it. I just left it alone. They won't get anymore of my money for firearms and I'll continue on my way with my CCW. We are all happy.....

I had similar experience with Sportmen's when I was purchasing more than one handgun. The manager on duty did not know a non-LEO could do this. I had to provide him with the PC and page on the DOJ site. He verified with corp.
