    CCW Question

Hi, everyone. Kind of a stupid question. For people who carry ... I was just told that (of course) while it is legal to OWN and USE full capacity magazines (eg 17- and 18- round magazines), it is NOT legal to use them for concealed carry. For concealed carry we are limited to ten-round magazines.

    Can anyone confirm?

I called CA DOJ but have heard no response.

    Thanks.

It’s not illegal, you just said so. You have to call the issuing agency to ask if they will revoke your permit over a standard capacity magazine. There could be a policy against std cap mags, depends on the county and agency.

Refer to your IA's policies. DON'T ASK. It's legal and it's either in their written policy or it's not.

If it's not in their policy, then leave it alone.

Yea DOJ was the wrong agency to call, you would have to ask the issuing agency, I.E. local sheriff or PD that issues the CCW. Although most condone not to call them and if if something is legal that is legal...

This, but be advised that the prevailing legal advice here on Calguns is DO NOT CALL THE ISSUING AGENCY AND ASK THEM ABOUT ANYTHING MAGAZINE-RELATED.

Using standard capacity mags, that you legally own, is 100% legal. Period. Calling all these government agencies that you KNOW are anti-gun and asking them for permission to use your mags is just going to get them thinking that maybe they should ban those, too.

            1) It is legal unless it is stated in writing on your permit that it is not legal.

            2) Don't call anyone.

Understood. The interviewer was very pro-Second Amendment and both of us commiserated (?) that law abiding citizens will comply with the law and BG's will not which is stupid. He seemed like a good guy.

Point of order- no issuing agency can deem any magazine as legal or not. None. Nada. Zip. They can provide policy that violating may have ramifications to your CCW permit.

Some issuing agencies have their own specific requirements (no rifle calibers, unmodified, etc) - but like everyone else says, unless explicitly put in writing, it’s a non-issue.

                    ^^^Amen!!

I'm amazed at the questions folks will ask these days. That little bowl of grey noodles inside their skull just starts to boil and out pops a stupid question or wacky hypothetical right out of their mouth.

My last renewal class in San Bernardino, this question was asked and we where told to stick with the ten round magazines until settled in court. The website backs this up with the following under the "General FAQ" tab.
Can I carry standard capacity magazines over 10 rounds with my CCW firearm?

No, at this time you are only allowed to carry a maximum of a 10-round magazine until further notice
