Driving while CCW

Hello Everyone,

Just had a quick question, any of my fellow Californian 2nd Amenmdent guys here take their gun off their belt while driving from home to say work? Or long trip? Then store the gun near your person say under the stearing column or next to your right hip or leg? If so do you have it exposed AKA, (in a holster that can possibly be seen) for comfort of driving or easier to draw the firearm if something is to happen?

What do you guys normally do that is legal here in California?

Any information or advice would be awesome as I can't seem to find anything.

Sometimes I will take off my QuikClip Holster and wedge it between the seat and canter consul by my leg and then cover it with a dew rag or towel to keep it concealed.

I recommend against putting it anywhere it can get dislodged in an accident (like on a magnet under the dash).

Would suck to be forced off the road by bad guys and reach for your CCW to find it's now under the back seat.

Legally it must be concealed.
While transferring from holster to holster, or holster to locked storage, one must be discreet. Personally, if I am transferring from holster to locked storage before parking to walk into a GFZ, I'll stop several blocks from my destination so if I *am* spotted, I won't be walking away from the car near someone who knows there is a gun in it.

Legally, it must be concealed, and situated in a manner that you have sole control over it (to prevent a possible loaded gun charge against a passenger).
Personally, I do not transfer to another holster while driving. I carry at about 2:30, so it is accessible standing or seated.

I don't do anything different when I'm driving, gun stays in the holster where it normally sit's. Did two six hour drives this last week up to Oregon and back, with my G19 at 4-4:30.

I've never repositioned my carry handgun while driving.
Kept it holstered, IWB around 4:30 position.

Even when driving for 4-8 hours at a time.

On long drives I have placed my pistol in the center console, only to have to look like I'm doing the macarena getting the IWB holster and belt back in place before stepping out at a stop. Now it stays on and in place, or I pocket carry a second, smaller backup.

Why don't you try finding a more comfortable on-body carry solution for driving? Taking your CCW gun off of your person is generally a bad idea.

What if you absentmindedly forget to take it, and then you've got your car parked all night with a gun in it (which could subsequently get stolen)? Of course we all think we'd never do something like that, but there have been CCWers in Long Beach and Orange County who have forgotten their guns in public places just within the past few months. I believe one was in a hotel room and one was in a bathroom, but I could be wrong about those locations.

What if you think it's out of sight from your own perspective, but a bored passenger in somebody else's car happens to take a look inside your car and sees the gun? What if that person freaks out and calls 911 on you, because after all, this is California?

What if you're the victim of a really bad road rage scenario, which is a time when you might actually need a gun, and your attacker rams your car? Your gun could fall between the seats, and you might not be able to get it when you need it most. In the 1986 Miami FBI shootout, from which a few lessons about modern gunfighting doctrine are drawn, something similar happened to one of the FBI agents involved. That agent survived the shootout, but two others didn't.

The best option, generally, is to keep it on your body. Try some different holsters and waist positions. Try a high-ride holster, which I personally find more comfortable while seated AND easier to conceal while standing, at the expense of perhaps a very tiny delay in draw speed.

Same but I carry a 1911. If you remove it as others have pointed out cover it with something. Most NDs happen when people re-holster. I avoid that as much as I can.

neither hubby or I remove them from our body while driving/riding in the car. they remain on our body. the only time they are removed is the few times we need to go into t GFZ. (i.e. post office)

AND, because the guns we each typically carry are not on each other's permits... when both of us are in the car, each gun needs to remain unavailable to the other person......

Same thing here, I have either a G43 or G19 positioned at 4:30 IWB throughout the course of my day whether I am driving or working in an attic. Stealthgear revolution mini holsters work for me.

I'd like to ask: apart from the added expense (good ones are not cheap), why not go with a jackass rig/shoulder holster for longer drives in weather that permits a cover garment?

I understand holster choice is highly personal, just like bicycle saddles, but it is a lot less expensive to ask here than it is to buy a decent shoulder holster, only to have it relegated to "the drawer" (or the box or whatever people use for holsters they tried and didn't like).
