I travel within CA often. I see ads for ammo at a better price than I can get. Can i carry ammo without a firearm, in my carry on? Can I check it?

Must be in checked baggage, locked in a hard shell case and contained. By contained I mean in a magazine or proper ammunition box, intended to protect the primer from being struck. I flew to Atlanta last weekend, and I'm flying again this weekend. No problems with Southwest.

Also, check with your airline.
Some airlines limit the amount of ammunition they will allow you to check in.

Read the United Airlines guidelines yesterday and they stipulated that only 11 pounds of ammunition would be permissible per person.
So what, it would take 3 people to carry 1,000 rounds of 9mm?

Oh, I forgot! Southwest has the same policy, max 11 pounds!

I like to go to the Big Reno Show with my car and pick up bulk ammo. This year will have to be the last .....until Prop 63 gets overturned or I leave CA. Do So Cal guys ever go to Vegas area to get ammo during gun shows? Getting ammo is just a perk to seeing the show and socializing for me, I don't just go for ammo.

Alaska allows 50#. Must be in original boxes/containers packed into a locked luggage/bag.

Hard to believe it's worth the hassle considering the very reasonable bulk ammo prices I'm finding online right now. Besides, is this a topic for the CCW forum?

Ammo does not need to be locked or be in a hard shell case. I have traveled around the world with ammo in a soft, unlocked duffel style bag. They do need to be in a box of some sort though. I usually use MTM boxes sealed with duct tape to make sure they don't open and spill, though factory ammo boxes work as well.
