Completing mods before qualification?

Before anyone asks, I did search.

Can someone explain the process of qualifying, and modifications?

During the qualification process, is the firearm examined for any functional mods, or is this done by the IA at a different time?

I want to stipple my Glock, add night sights, and put on a zev slide that I have laying around. No trigger/laser/light/etc.

Depends on the IA.

Mine only checks the trigger weight/function on range day

Same as above for Riverside. For semi auto, they worked the slide and dry fired it a couple times. For my revolver they dry fired a few times, they didn't care that it had Crimson Trace laser grips on it. All of that was at the qual shoot.

Riverside was strictly no stippling. They said it in the class and inspected guns before qualifying. They didn't even allow my G19 which is otherwise stock besides having forward cocking serrations milled into the slide.

The deputy basically said "sights, grip wraps or tape, external lasers/lights, and extended magazine releases were the only modifications allowed. No permanent modifications such as stippling"

Check with your IA before you qualify.

I had a gun kicked for a trigger job MDC removal. In OC it is stated that it is a violation of your license if

"M. Possessing a weapon altered from its originally approved design, or weapon not listed on license,

So even cosmetic mods such as aftermarket slide, and stippling?

My IA (Orange County SD) doesn't allow gun modifications or attachments not approved by them. The Terms of License include the following prohibitions, "possessing a weapon altered from its originally approved design", or "possessing any equipment or attachments to a firearm not specifically approved as part of the license". So who is your IA?

You'll be fine with those things in OC. Those are all cosmetic.

An aftermarket slide is not just "cosmetic"

Isn't it though? Functionally it changes nothing in regards to the mechanics of the firearm. The only difference is that one could argue that the serrations help with manipulation in case of a jam/FTF.

95% of the instructors in OC won't even look at your gun. If they qualify you with the gun and give you a training cert, you're good. Back in the day you (we) had to go to the OCSD armory to have the armorer check out our guns. We know longer do that.

With that logic you could also argue that an aftermarket barrel/trigger/whatever has the same function and the only difference is cosmetics.

The instructor at Riverside said Glock 3.5 connectors were ok mods because it's a factory Glock part. Also if you sent your Sheild to S&W for a performance center trigger that would also be acceptable because it's factory parts installed by S&W. Anything else that wasn't OEM is a no-go.

When I asked IA (OCSD) they said contact the location you did your training at and ask them they will guide you in the right direction...

I admit I was rather vague with my arguement. My reasoning was that the Zev slide I have only has enhanced serrations, with an RMR cut out (that I would block). The actual firing mechanics aren't enhanced in any way. Whereas after market barrels and triggers are marketed as "precision" or "match grade", which could be argued to be "more deadly" in a law suit type situation.

I will definitely give the IA and instructor a call when the time comes. Thanks!
