Orange County: Inexpensive CCW Training Class Review

Note: I was unable to post a new thread in the CCW Training subforum, so mods, please move this or delete if inappropriate.

I just recently completed a ccw class at OC Firearms Academy on Jan 29.

This is probably the quickest and cheapest class you can take in OC. I got a special for $120 but their regular price is about $150 or $175. It's a 1 day session from 8am to about 1-3pm. This includes classroom and range qualifying. Range fee is not included in that price (about $20 extra).

Anyway, let's get to the review. My class was taught by 2 instructors, both retired LEO and really nice guys. The class went over the required material from OC Sherriff's CCW Policy, which you can find here

The remainder of the class went over applicable laws.

I felt that they could have spent more time reminding people how great of a responsibility it is to have a ccw. How it will greatly impact your life if you ever have to use it. For some reason I don't think most of the class realized it because when everyone was given a scenario and asked whether they would shoot or run, almost everyone said they would shoot. And in every instance, that would have been the wrong choice. Now I'm not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't do in a situation because no one knows what they will do. But if you ever use your weapon, guaranteed you're getting arrested and going to jail, but I'm getting off topic.

Back to the review. The classroom portion was about 4-5 hours long then we went to the range.

Weapon qualifying was you have to hit 51 in the black outline out of 72. No time limit. 20 shots at 21 feet (7 yards). 20 shots at 15 feet (5 yards), 11 shots at 9 feet (3 yards). If you can't hit that refrigerator-sized target at those distances then you need some serious training.

Al in all, I was very satisfied with my experience. This class met my expectation for what I was looking for: a quick, inexpensive class that meets the training requirements set by OCSD.

If you're looking for more advanced tactical training, then I'd recommend taking those classes separately, but this class was only meant to satisfy the CCW requirements.
