Advise Please

I work at small exclusive private school in Los Angeles as a substitute teacher/tennis coach. Students who attend come from very wealthy families, many celebrity children. My concern as of late is that we have no armed security on campus and are very vulnerable. Basically, we are sitting ducks if sh** hit the fan and a shooting occurred.

I know their are a few school districts who allow teachers/employees to carry a concealed weapon but it is not very common and looked down upon given the general public view on guns.

I want to bring to the Head of Schools attention but do not know how to approach without scaring people. If at least someone is armed we have some chance against a live shooter. Our unarmed security guards are pretty much useless in a situation like this.

Carrying a firearm and schools is a very touchy subject and I want to approach this situation the right way. I am sure most parents would be fearful to hear anything about guns.

Any good advice from someone who would have knowledge in something like this?

What do you mean the amount of money they pay for their kids tuition to go to that school isn't bought protection. Money protects all, didn't you know. Just throw fistfuls at any gunmen that come onto campus

$40k a year tuition, most have siblings. If sh** hit the fan imagine the lawsuits towards the school for having no armed protection. If I was a parent, I would totally hold school accountable, all that $$$ and security guards with flashlights and radios?? What about a ransom situation? Its nonsense, to be honest with you, I feel very vulnerable when I am in class, sometimes just sitting there looking outside the window thinking what if the "unthinkable" actually happened.. We are told to lock the doors in a "lockdown situation" lol

Sometimes you have to think like a criminal. If I was a criminal would take out the armed security first. This is why I think having a concealed weapon would serve a better purpose, element of surprise.

Serious though. just put bars around the windows and doors they can't leave during school hours. The kids of the more popular celebrities get individule teachers in a locked bulletproof room.....we will call it solitary...oh wait that's public schools. Nevermind

I've got to ask why are you or these "children of celebrities" any more important than probably 99% of the other teacher's or school children in Ca? If they wanted to have armed security at the school, they could certainly arrange to have it. However since from what I can tell most celebrities are pretty vocal anti-gun screw them. Maybe it's time they wake up to the real world that isn't safe like the rest of us do everyday.

I wouldn't approach it from a "How would you feel about me getting a CCW?" standpoint. You'll likely freak out the probably-liberal administrator.

Maybe say something like, "I heard that so-and-so school (give actual example) has decided to allow it's teachers to be trained and licensed to CCW at school as a security layer to protect students in the event of an unthinkable event. What do you think about that?" This opens the door to hear their position before you lay out yours.

I agree with you all, the whole anti-gun persona is nonsense, was raised around guns myself. Honestly, I really care about the kids, and my personal safety, don't really care they come from $$, again I agree with you all.

Really looking for informative info from someone who has some background in this type of situation.

NO, the school does not have that authority. The head of the school can authorize someone who currently has a CCW to carry a firearm on school property, but the school does not have authority to issue.

If you have your CCW, you can speak with Sheriff/ IA on how to form up a letter and structure a verbal exchange with Administrator.
