    CCW Application question

New guy here and had a quick question regarding CCW applications. It is in regards to section 7, question 2.

Have you ever been treated for a mental Illness. If answered yes, is it a disqualification for generalized anxiety that is managed with medication/therapy.

Thanks in advance. A bit of a concern. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Private message welcomed also if you prefer.

Doctor patient confidentiality is your friend. Would you say you have a mental illness? Or do you just have mild depression / anxiety ? Not sure what county you are in but .... might want to think twice before putting that.

General Anxiety Disorder GAD is defined as a Mental Disorder.

As such, answering the question in the negative would be considered a Felony Offense and if discovered could result in all kinds of issues you do not want. The worst possibly being jail and loss of your gun rights.

        HOWEVER:

GAD is considered minor. The best answer is to answer yes. Fully disclose and discuss it with your IA. If it were me I would attempt to get a letter from my doctor regarding my condition and treatment. The worst they could say is NO.

I am not a Doctor nor a Mental Health Professional. This answer is based on a discussion I had with one. Obviously you should consult your own professionals.

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

I would encourage you to be honest and straight forward. A mental illness related issue needs to be fully disclosed. You don't want to obtain a LTC under false pretenses, become involved in a gun related incident and face enormous unintended legal consequences when a potentially disqualifying issue is discovered. Anything short of full disclosure would be reckless, unethical and really stupid IMHO. Best success with your endeavor.

GAD is not the kind of disorder they are worried about, it's pretty common and is easily treated. Unless you have a specific diagnosis for it, as I your insurance has been billed for treatment of GAD that you have sub clinical symptoms that don't qualify under the criteria for a mental disorder. Medication is a little trickier and its up to your IA. I believe the spirit of that rule about not being on medication is really intended for stuff that can be abused or cause a person to essentially be "high" like opiates or Xanax. All this stuff should be protected by HIPPA, however I wouldn't risk it. You aren't the only guy with your circumstances who disclosed everything and was still issued a permit, I'm sure.

In other words, don't assume anything about being diagnosed cause lots of times people get treatment for anxiety without an official documented disorder. So check with your doctor or the clinician who you worked on the GAD symptoms with. For sure ask your IA to clarify about the medication, and try to get a letter saying its effect or potential effects.

It wouldn't be a felony unless he's been committed to a mental institution.

OP - I wouldn't list it, but that's just me. If you do list it you're not going to get issued to. If you don't list it they won't find out about it unless they're an IA that wants a note from your doctor or you had some contact with police involving the matter (arrest, welfare check, whatever.)

Full disclosure is the only way to go. If you are in doubt about your condition or how it will be viewed, either don't apply OR apply and risk getting denied and having that in your file.

I'm curios if they could find out what you are taking from Cures database? If it's a scheduled medication wouldn't that show up? I would think that would look bad not mentioning it. I'm just not sure if the issuing agency checks that in their background check? Here's a link to the programs website and it says law enforcement have access to it.

Assembly Bill 82 Assembly Bill (AB) 82 (Ward, Chapter 679, Statutes of 2025), signed into law on October 13, 2025, directly impacts dispensers who report specified medications to the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES), maintained by the California Department of Justice (DOJ). The dispensing of testosterone or mifepristone shall not be reported to DOJ, CURES, or its contracted prescription data processing vendor. For more information, please review the CURES AB 82 Bulletin.

It would only be a misdemeanor. But if discovered the false statement would get him denied.

In my experience they seem more concerned with honesty then with minor issues. GAD is pretty minor

So a guy comes onto the Conceal Carry section of a reputable message board, acknowledges a potential mental problem and asks for advice on disclosing said illness on his application to carry concealed. Reputable members of the community encourage him to lie about said mental problems on his application? What am I missing here?

Fair enough, then again what are bullet buttons and featureless. Only this man knows the depths of his anxiety. He has not been 5150 a doctor will treat you for anxiety for worrying about bills. In the near future they will deny us if we smoke because if you don't get your fix you will be on edge.
