So I had a buddy who just took a class this past weekend and said that one of the people there actually qualified with a .22 and had two other guns on his app with different caliber that he didn't have to qualify with... Is that even possible? Or is this BS?

CCW qualification caliber

To my understanding one must quality with each firearm, to which the instructor must sign off pass/fail to be put on CCW permit. As for the .22 I think the smallest caliber you can go is .380, but each county has different rules. Not 100% and I am shure I will be corrected, but just to my knowledge.Calguns Addiction -

Stanislaus Co. one qualifying score is required. No pass/fail on the permit.
No particular handgun design or cal. for qualification or carry.
.22 rimfire is acceptable.
So long as you shoot a qualifying score you're good.
It need not be shot with a gun listed on your permit.

You can have anything as I understand it. At my last CCW class, the instructor signed off on a few Beretta 21As in 22.
But typically we are allowed 3 guns on our CCW. And the 22 was just the small hideout one.
I joked next time I wanted to have a AR pistol as one of my three, and the instructor smiled and say "sure, it's your court date".

Again, it depends on the IA. VCSO will not allow "rifle calibers" (meaning guns chambered in what is traditionally rifle cartridges since "caliber" is only the OD of the projectile) or handguns which are chambered for shotgun shells (like 12g AOWs) on permits. Some IAs don't allow anything calibers measuring .25" or smaller. Some IAs don't have a limit on the number of firearms on permits. Some allow up to 5. I don't think it's "typically only 3" throughout the state, just your IA's policy. You can have anything as I understand it. At my last CCW class, the instructor signed off on a few Beretta 21As in 22.

The Merced County SO requires the weapon to be chambered for a centerfire cartridge. So no .22s there.Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved, there can be no rule making or legislation which would abrogate them.

I've heard of some counties allowing the AR pistol. Some will, some wont. Just like EVERYTHING else we just hashed out in this thread. You can have anything as I understand it. At my last CCW class, the instructor signed off on a few Beretta 21As in 22.

Everything depends on the county or IA 'rules'.
I dont know if my county allows AR pistol, be we are allowed 6 guns... nothing smaller than 380.Comment

I like the way Nevada does it....qualify with a revolver or pistol and you're go to go carrying any revolver or pistol! None of this crap of qualifying with everything you may wish to carry.
If you find a different gun that you want to carry after getting your permit, just go ahead and buy it; carry it right afterwards!!!UT - Done
AZ - Done
NV - Done
CA - Done

For Tulare, I didn't have to qualify. Just attended a 4 hr course at the nearby CoS (jc). For NV I had to qualify. But not for UT, FL. Or even TX (when I lived there).NRA Life Member

Does anyone know what the "minimum" is based on? Are you saying that because a .380 is a physically larger diameter, it is better than a .327 magnum? Seems kind of dumb to have a minimum requirement."If a man hasn't found something worth dying for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr.

I don't know about anyone else but if you can't qualify with the firearm to be put on your permit,(unless you have put it upon yourself to put in the proper trigger time and training) I wouldn't want you to be carrying it around to defend yourself . I might be the innocent bystander that gets hit with one of your strays. Always remember every bullet has a lawyer behind it.
