    Am Very interested

Am very interested since I live in Oceanside, and would like to have an outdoor range close.

I've tried contacting the SMGC a few times in the past with no luck... Hopefully, this new forum will lead to some fun activities. Looking forward to it.

I'm glad we finally have a stop on this forum to discuss the club and events. I've added the web address with points of contact. Feel free to check us out or drop us some questions.

Check the F-Class stuff, if you guys are scoped rifle shooters it's probably right up your lane. When you look at the schedule and it says "mid-range" you are more than welcome to participate.

These are good folks. Had the pleasure to relay with Marco and talk with Matthew at the CMP Western Games a few years back. Good to see them here.

With the Western Games approaching once again; do you run any Garand matches?

                  Hunter,
Here's the website and schedule for SMGC:

This is a Non-Federal Entity. It is not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and it has no governmental status.

If you want to check it out, I'm usually there at least once a month. Email and I'll meet you there.
The range is fantastic, up to 600 yds. Haven't tried the pistol range.
Be aware that SMGC is not like a public range. You have to shoot the prescribed NRA High Power course of fire- can't just show up and blaze away.
Bring your AR, M1, M1a etcetera, GI web sling, shooting jacket, ground mat, and a spotting scope if you have one. It's really a lot of fun and will improve your shooting. I'm sure you know about Creedmoor Sports in Oceanside; that's a good place to get gear for NRA shoots.
www.odcmp.org has more info on NRA HP shooting.
Learn good tips, techniques from the many experienced shooters there.
You can show up to an event and observe. Have your license, registration, insurance ready to get on base. SMGC events are held at Wilcox Range 102.

I am planning to visit/observe/participate the weekend of the 21st, and then probably be back for the 29th. Most likely with a friend.

I'm looking forward to this. I'm going to try to make it to the Costa Mesa Show this weekend too. We'll see.

One more question about what to bring. I have M1a's and Garands, but my friend has an OLL. Is the base OLL friendly?

                    Thanks.

I just spent about 15 min writing a response and lost it...so this will be more abreiviated. All you must have is a rifle, ammo (60-80rds would be more than enough...we all reload), hearing protection, and the paperwork to get on base. A sling would be helpful, since it is used for two of the three positions we shoot. A spotting scope or a set of binos would be helpful to spot rounds if you have one, if not I'm sure someone will let you use theirs. The only other thing that is really important: make sure your vehicle paperwork is in order...just remember you're entering an active duty military base with a rifle and ammo. We have specific instructions on our web page. Just come on out and have a great time and get to know the guys.

I know I saw it somewhere, but what time does the practices typically start?

                            Dear Sir,

I'm the President/COB of the SMCG. If you, or anyone else would like to discuss firearm specifications please feel free to come and discuss your issues with me in person Sunday at the Costa Mesa Show.

                            Thank you,
                            John Hermsen

                              Thanks.
As long as the OLL rifle is legally configured per California law, he will have no problems bringing it on base. Even though the base is federal land, California laws are enforced on base, including those pertaining to AW's.

Pretty much all the shooters with OLL rifles are running a bullet button set up. There is a protocol for using the Prince50-locked toploaders for rapid fire strings, too, so either way your friend should be good to go. If he's using the bullet button to drop mags he should get and bring along one of the empty chamber indicators (ECI's) that lock into the magwell in place of a mag and have a flag that protrudes from the ejection port to have in place when the rifle is not on the firing line. If he's got a Prince50, then a regular ECI that goes into the chamber and has a protruding yellow arm to stick out of the ejection port will do. Lots of places offer both styles on line. I got mine from the Bushmaster website. They're cheap, and one or the other is required for firing line safety.

He should also bear in mind that if his OLL is built as anything other than an A2 or A4 (i.e., as an M4gery, or anything with a telescoping stock or with a barrel shorter than 20", or a 24" or longer barreled varmint build, or with a Monster Man grip) it's going to be classed either as a match rifle or an F-class rifle and not a service rifle for shooting matches.

Hope to see you out there!
