So is SMGC dead, or what?

    Is SMGC dead?

If so, it would be nice if somebody posted the death notice, so we can have some closure and move on.

I am not an expert on the details but it appears the USMC or the United States Government is requiring a very expensive environmental impact study from SMGC as a condition to use the ranges on the base. We are talking roughly $10,000.00 a year.

The added rounds SMGC would put down range above what the Corp puts down range is perhaps 1% of the total rounds. Also, range availability is very low as units previously deployed are now home, and training requires more range time.

The club isn't dead as there is always hope, but for the foreseeable future the schedule looks very thin.

You can still shoot in The Pac Fleet and navy matches. That's two solid weeks of shooting on the west coasts premium
      ranges.

Putting on a match at pendleton was a very laborious exercise. You were required to have two certified RSO's, a corpman or medic, an OIC, constant comm with range control, plus paperwork befitting the IRS, and strict adherence to archaic SOPs. Truly a nightmare scenario to shoot a match, yet SMGC did it for 30 years. It was a great experience and a deep well of nationally ranked shooters.

What we need now is a box canyon like west end gun club. With the advent of cheap electronic targets pits are no longer required, making the development of a proper range very cheap indeed. If you know of a property for sale that fits the bill please contact me.

Regular membership is open to active and retired military personnel and their dependents (those possessing a Uniformed Services Identification Card); and to civilians on a limited basis (club by-la…

they are taking memberships again, looks like if you are a civ. you have to get sponsored to access then update that sponsorship every 60 days. not sure if that will be seamless or take a long time. the inital sponsorship will take " 90 day advance signup and notification to the Base Provost Marshall" per their facebook page. and so far its still just 556 308 and 300wmag

AFAIK SMGC is providing the sponsorship to the end of the year, After that we will need DBIDS cards. that will solve the the base access issues. but the background check and application process is lengthy from what i understand.

Would a current CAC card be sufficient for base access?

current CAC is good to go.

DBIDS is only needed for civilians that have no current base access. it is a replacement for RapidGate and other ID's for civilians. DBID's gets everyone on the same system.
