New to long range shooting and need some advise

After reading as much as I could I have put together the follow riffle. Remington 700 sps heavy barrel 26 inches in length. Harris bipod for prone shooting. I have started with a bushnell 10x40 fixed mil dot scope.

What are the appropriate steps to break in the barrel?

Shoot bullets through the barrel to break it in.

David Tubb makes a bullet lapping kit

which allows you to fire-lap the barrel. Factory barrels will copper foul a lot more than a custom barrel like a Kreiger or a Bartlein.

Or as the poster above said, just shoot it. However, you need to clean rigorously and often while the barrel is new. After a while, you will see the barrel showing less and less copper fouling. Then you know its broken in.

Both the procedure and necessity for breaking in a barrel are forever debated. On a factory hammer forged barrel it would not seem necessary, but if you are interested in breaking in a barrel, go to the websites of some of the custom barrel makers (Bartlien, Kreiger, Shillen, etc.). Most of these manufacturers have posted their recommended break-in procedures.
