New member in the East Bay

I've known about calguns for a while but joined after my first gun purchase, picked up a 10/22 a couple of weeks ago. I'm having a little trouble finding ammo for it but I gather that's a very common problem.

I was doing some searching through the FAQs and I know that there are no state laws pertaining to unloaded rifles in vehicles in CA, only a federal law saying that it must be in a locked container when 1000ft near schools. My question is, I have a nonlocking soft gun bag, and I store my 10/22 in it with Ruger's locking brace in the action to render it inoperable. Is this insufficient for the federal law? Do I have to buy an actual hard case with a lock?

welcome aboard there's a lot of great information about all our complicated California firearms laws at the Calguns foundation Wiki information pages. I know I learned a lot there.
If you go there you'll get the info. in easy to understand plain language.

Welcome to Calguns, check out the 2A section and the rimfire ammo finds thread!
ps: A gun must be unloaded and in a "locked container"; the trunk of your car counts as a locked container. Convenient, no? You don't need the cable lock if the guns locked in the trunk.

Welcome, east bay here too. As far as I know if you put your unloaded and inoperable gun in the trunk (gotta be closed compartment, like on a sedan) you should be fine.
