New To Site and CA... AR Question

Ok, So my family just moved here for the next 3 years. I'm in the market for a .308 AR, but the shop nearest me says they rarely get any in. I am a Texas "resident" still. Current TX DL, TX vehicle reg etc.... ( my wife is in the Military ). So my question is when I go back to TX in March to visit, can I purchase my AR there, and have a Bullet Button installed and be CA Legal? The guy at the shop told me that technically its still an illegal weapon, because it would be a "modified banned weapon", since it was not built in CA to be CA compliant. Sounds to me like they just wanted to make some money off of me, WHICH would be fine if they had any .308's!! Even if they get any in, there's no guarantee what brand or model it'll be....... ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

      Hi Rj,
Welcome to Calguns and the other side of the Iron Curtain

Check out Calguns Flow Chart. Answer the questions step by step and you'll have your answer... although, you kinda need to know what brand and configuration you would be purchasing.

Now that we need to register long guns, it sorta throws a wrench into the deal, but someone more knowledgeable will pop in here and let you know about that portion.

A weapon brought into the state would need to have the bullet button installed and no magazine over 10 rounds OR be a featureless rifle (allowing no Bullet Button) and no magazine over 10 rounds. Keep in mind, rebuild kits (magazine parts kits that could allow more than 10 rounds) needed to be in your possession here, prior to the first of the year.

Thanks for the Welcome guys! I'm obviously not set in stone yet, but I like the DPMS Panther Arms Recon in .308. Whatever I decide on will have a bullet button installed prior to arriving here. Now again this is where I get confused, on the flow chart it lists " DPMS PANTHER (ALL) ", but the Shop I was in today carry and sell DPMS rifles, just rarely get them in.... Does the fact that they say DPMS PANTHER ARMS make it a OLL? I'm well aware of the 10 rd mag situation, almost ran into some issues with my 1911 variant, but got it smoothed out... Again thanks for the welcomes and replies

          Welcome to calguns!

I love TX btw. My wife's from the DFW area.

Anyways, I don't wanna give you bad advice, and I've never researched that specific point of bringing in a rifle from out of state that has a BB installed, but unless the lower isn't on the roster as a banned CA firearm I don't see the problem...

You'd probably have an easier time finding one locally though.

Check out the "centerfire / gas operated rifle" forums in here and ask that same question. You'll probably get a better answer.

If your wife is in the military her PCS orders make her a CA resident for gun buying purposes, just have her buy it, all she needs is here military ID and original orders as proof of (CA) residency.

If you do buy one in Texas, don't forget that it must not be on the prohibited by name list on the flow chart.
                Sorry, not sorry.

I realize this, it was never a question of HOW ill purchase the gun, it's IF I can find one here in CA. AND IF NOT, can I make it CA compliant if purchased in TX. I'll also save about $400 on the same gun in TX, mark ups are ridiculous here! Haha. Thanks though.
