40 years ago I used to hunt for game birds, deer and elk. After a bad hunt involving drunk pheasant hunters, I quit shooting. Now I want to get back into shooting. My wife thinks that I need another hobby (she is hoping that I will go after targets instead of her). So here is my quandary, I want a cheap .22lr to restart (under $300 with a scope) before I go to the best for a grand. What would you recommend as a starter kit?

The Marlin and Ruger semi autos are fun guns, but with the experience you have in precision shooting, think about a Marlin 925. With a real world price of about $170 for one with wood furniture or close to $100 with black synthetic furniture, you could put $150+ into the optics. Honestly, a turreted $30 BSA 3-9X40 scope will give you a bright image and the ability to see the bullet fly beyond 200 yards. With that combo and the cheapest 22LR ammo you can find, you can get near same hole groups at 25 yards, quarter sized groups at 50 yards and reliably break clays and kill soda cans at 100. It is not a match grade competition gun and certainly not priced as one. It is also not meant to "spray and pray", but I have a feeling you have no need for one either.
Being that it is a bolt gun, it gives you the time to think between shots and lets you concentrate on each pull of the trigger. If you do a search, you'll see that you can reduce the pull of the trigger way down at the cost of a ball point pen spring and about 5 minutes. That really helps increase the accuracy.
There is a tube fed version also for not much more.

Can't really go wrong with the Ruger 10/22. They shoot well out of the box and the upgrade-ability will ensure your gun will be used for many many moons.
