    Moving to California from Louisiana..

Well I figured I would introduce myself. I'm moving from Louisiana to California for the military and of course have a lot of questions with the different firearms laws. I'm going to do my research before I post asking questions all over the place of course.

I'm a patrol cop on military leave, I have a small LLC that I use to teach and train others for Louisiana concealed carry, NRA basic pistol, NRA PPITH, and NRA PPOTH. I have a lot of guns that I'm planning on bringing with me, and I'm really hoping that since I'm still commissioned as LEO that the LEOSA applies even when on leave from the department. If anyone wants to save me the time researching, feel free to share your wisdom on AR's, shotguns, pistols, and bolt action rifle law differences.

Also I've noticed elsewhere on the forum and others that CA has a provision for active military personnel PCS'ing to bring what CA calls assault weapons. I've read that it only requires a copy of the orders and the registration form, however on the CA DOJ website it also lists Commanders approval stating that weapons is required for military use. I don't know of too many units that allow soldiers to use personal weapons for military purposes, so I don't see where this would apply to me. I'm wondering if anyone has done this before?

Welcome to California. Your LEOSA question really revolves around your credentialing status from your agency while you're on leave. When I last went on active duty, my agency paid me the difference between my regular and military pay. That kept me in an active employed status.

You're correct in that California does have a provision for you to obtain a permit to import assault weapons while you are on active duty. It's not an easy process and it requires a Base Commander's signature stating the weapons are required for your military duties. Please note that it's the Base Commander's signature that's required, not your Unit Commander's signature. I'm attaching a copy of the application form.
