How do i create new characters and also put them in a saved game in sims 3?

How do i create new characters and also put them in a saved game in sims 3?

I've noticed that every time i want to create a new character, it starts a new file where my old characters are not included in it or vice verse. I would like to know how to add new characters in sims 3 where the other characters that i've made are still there like how it was in sims 2 & 1
