AW Modification Question

I am confused by the various lists banning AW as to if a named Make and Model (Colt Sporter AR-15) can be modified to eliminate one of the key 'evil features' and then be legal? On the one hand it is listed specifically but on the other hand if one of the defining features is removed then it would seem logical that it would drop off the list - what do we know?

It boils down to whether it's a listed model or not. If so, no mods will make it legal. If not, removing the features makes it legal.
