Hello all, like most new to forum i am long time lurker and shooter from Vacaville,ca smack in the middle of sacramento and san fransisco. New to ownership due to having young babies and an overprotective but more so uneducated wife.(Gun wise lol we are well educated) Haha

Well after months of me reading her posts and advice from. You fine people, my dedicatin to safe and resonsible gun ownership and recent sadly tragic events she agreed to allow me to purchse.

I have been to range and shot quite a few different guns calibers and setups. I am quite the proficient shooter and my buddy who i shoot with said i can really do well if i get some more practice and my own gun lol....

So looking forward to talking with you all at some point and hopefully meeting as many as possible at the range sometime. Also im looking for a good weekly shooter/home defense starting handgun. If anyone has suggestion or for sale please pm me.

Glock 19/17 are good starters.

Maybe post up a new thread under California handguns and tell us what you liked and did not like and we could pin a few more choices down.

Also consider a 357/38 revolver such as GP100 or SW 686, 4 or 6".

Importing Your Father-In-Law's gun is challenging

Hi, I'm new here. I've lived in CA for 4 years, but only shot a gun once 4 years ago in IL.

My parents-in-law just moved in with me to CA and while my mother-in-law was packing up for the move, she found her husband's old S&W Model 36 revolver (5 round capacity, chambered for .38 spl, wikipedia say a 1.875 length barrel, google search suggests a ~1975ish manufacture date). I've left it in the care of a friend while I figure out a way to legally own the gun in CA.

Which brings me here, I've done various google searches and established thus far:
The barrel is too short for SAE.
I can't do OPLAW (intrafamilial transfer) for multiple reasons. The biggest one is that legally my friend owns the gun now I think.
There is a S&W Model 36 on the roster, but it is a different gun. Since the gun I want is not on the roster, I can't import it into CA through a FFL.
I could potentially wait 10-20 years for it to become 50 years old and import it as C&R.

is there any hope for me to legally own this gun in CA now though? If so, which forum would I start a thread in to get some help?

Good afternoon Cal Guns. I've been a long time lurker browsing this site as a reference several times over the years. This is my first post on ANY forum so I hope this is the right spot. I've lived in California all my life. I witnessed the original AWB and Magazine ban as a teenager and thought this state could not get any worse. I am sickened by the legislation that's passed in recent weeks and want to stay in the know. I look forward to joining the discussion and contributing where I can.
