    gun transfers

Hello everyone, new to this site, so I am still trying to familiarize with it.Been shooting for about 20yrs. now.Recently lost my brother to cancer and was searching the web for answers on transferring guns, and here I am.Can anyone direct me to where I can find information on how I can transfer my brother's gun's into mine( if possibly that I cant find documentation for them). He owned a Colt .44, Browning 12g,Springfield Armory 1911 .45, Colt Sporter AR-15 pre-ban. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Colt Sporter is a listed AW in CA (see the flow chart)

so you are going to at the very least dispose of the lower receiver, you can keep all the parts from it, but the receiver's got to go, either out of state or to a CA AW dealer.

I'm not sure how the actual transfer of the guns works though.

The forms for registering firearms are available on the CA D.O.J. web sight or at the D.M.V. A $19.00 fee for each firearm. The forms are pretty simple. As previously noted, the Colt AR is a no no.

Presuming your brother was in CA, either he left them to you or the estate can transfer (sell) them to you.

As noted, the AR is out - 'assault weapons' can't be transferred in CA to a non-LEO CA resident.

If you inherited them, it's the Operation of Law form - $19 for all the handguns; long guns, other than 'assault weapons', don't need any forms.

If you need to get them from the estate as a sale, it would be a Private Party Transfer - need an FFL.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
