As mentioned this is long overdue but here it is. As many have noticed we're having a bit more stability and less problems. We're not 'there' yet but we're moving forward at least.
I hired a Database Admin to work on our problematic DB and he found several issues that he has been correcting. Some of what he is doing has been stopgap fixes as he is finding problem in the vB config and program that are causing massive numbers of errors, error log generations and caching issues.
Unsurprisingly vBulletin's response to these issues is 'You need to buy an updated license and install the latest version'. As much as this galls me it is something I am considering even though I am far from enamored with vB at this point. Getting back to fully functional is more important than me finding it distasteful however I'm not convinced 'updating' vB is a long term solution. Many of our issues are tied to having moved from the obsolete 3.8.x version to the 'improved' newer version.
Alternatives however are slim, the three software options that look like they would maintain the feel of CGN are SMF, MyBB and Xenforo. The major issue with all three is that there is no native path or software to convert from vB 6 to any of the three. All require the use of a third party agent to handle the conversion at additional cost. For SMF and MyBB it's not that bad since they are both open source and have no license fee. The downside is fewer people who handle conversions. Xenforo has more people who do it but has a license fee on top of the conversion fee.
I'm still in the process of playing 'go-between' with the DB Admin and the vBulletin support forums. Once he feels we're at the limits of what he can do under this software I will look at most likely changing to the Xenforo software mainly because it has full commercial support.
