Sorry for your loss Kes. It’s never easy to lose someone, much less both parents.

I lost my dad in 2013 to cancer, and mom is 80, so I know the inevitable is coming.

There are a large number of us in the tech community willing to help. That help could be as simple as lining up a DBE, a website expert in vBulletin or xenfero, or even an offer to sell and step away from CGN, if that’s your desire.

I’ve been a MySQL/MariaDB database engineer for more than a decade now. Not sure if that’s what’s running the underlying database, but I’m happy to help if needed.

Kes, thanks for showing up. Better late, than never! Sorry about your parents. A lot of us in CGN land have been through this.

My thoughts on the issues with this site: At times I think it's unresponsive because the db indexes are trashed, and it's trying hard to find something. (couple of fixes could be throwing more RAM at it, and reindexing the key fields.)

Thanks for the update. Life sucks sometimes…sorry for the losses, the stress and the resultant funk that took a while to drag yourself out of. Been quite a **** show around here without you…glad you’re back. Hope things move forward and in a way that results in your family being together and stronger than ever.

I'm here to report we haven't burnt the place down and AFAIK there haven't been any real knock down dragged out fights that fill 20 pages of insults and threats or anything resembling a Klan, Fascist, Nazi, Commie, Marxist, Far Left Supremist extremist meetings or plots. Auto pilot with some bumps and jars as far as i can tell.

A lot of questions and theories concerning our fearless head janitor though and I think you pretty much answered them and reasons why. Everyone grieves in different ways and how major life events are handled. I'm sorry to hear of your struggles, it ain't easy. If I may go out on a very thin limb, some how I think your parents would like you to move forward and live your life and enjoy the short time that we all have. Just grab some elephant, fried, baked, smoked, slow cooked, well seasoned, what ever you prefer and chow down. Pass some out, get a party going!

I'm reminded of the first book of 'A Tale of Two Cities' where a nearly broken man against all odds is told " You know that you are recalled to life' ?

                Condolences. We're glad you're back.

I understand how losing parents...or any loved one...can really mess with your head. I'm so very sorry for your loss. If you're not speaking to a professional for help on how to deal with all this, you should really consider it, if you haven't already.

I wish you peace and healing. And big fat hugs with a side of Tere Hanges...but no butt stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Good to hear you are coming about. That type of loss is a hard thing and maybe the break is what you needed, no need to apologize to us scoundrels.

What exactly is the database software currently, and the server OS? What sort of access do you have to the server (root shell?) and the database?

Also, what is the fix that brings the site back when it craps out - restarting a service or? I think parallel to getting the database either fixed or ready to migrate to Xenforo, it would also be good to get a better (or any) watchdog script running on the existing site, so that the broken condition can be detected and the fix made timely and without any human intervention.

The S&W forum recently migrated from VB to Xenforo - they might be good folks to contact to get some direction on the who/how/what of that. I think it may be wiser to focus efforts on a migration rather than trying to fix this VB site.

                        Hi Kes.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I've never gotten over my father's passing completely, I can't imagine losing both parents so close at the same time.

First off, I want to say that you don't owe me any explanation-- as I had always believed--- and feared, that your absence here was most likely due to something like this, and your need to deal with YOUR priorities first. We here love the Calguns forum, and that said, it isn't more important than family, or dealing with other pressing life challenges. I've just been happy to be able to log on when I can and enjoy the camaraderie with like minded people, and no matter what the glitches have been, I'm thankful to for this website.

Brother, you are one of the good people. My hardiest best wishes for you and yours. Nice to have you back.

Hello Kestryll, it is good to hear from you. I am sorry for your losses, I lost my mom unexpectedly so I understand a little. I hope you can continue to be there for your wife, and yourself, that is the most important thing. When you are ready, plenty of people here are ready and willing to help with calguns. Take care.

Sorry for your losses; you haven’t failed anyone you have just needed time to process things and get back in the game. Family first but I am glad to see you back and look forward to stability being restored to this site.

But don't you realize so many of us here would have pulled to lift you up out of that blue malaise? You did so much to help build Calguns into a support system since taking over for Ramon, not only for 2nd Amendment issues, but also as a daily ear, that so many here would have not hesitated to help.
