Believe me I am, looking at the server stats now It's not the CPU or RAM so I'm thinking either server optimization or a software issue with vBulletin.

It's alternating between lightning fast and timeout slow. Seems like issues with the database. Several have suggested splitting the database and front end onto separate servers which is pretty common for these types of systems, but no idea whether vBulletin supports this configuration. Regardless, it seems like some database tuning is in order.

I noticed an issue where it is scanning the entire db instead of just a single thread. The "hover" that is supposed to show your last post in a thread is showing your last post in any thread.

The forum was pretty fast a while ago with 2200 guests. Now it is dog slow again and has over 2600 guests. Both cases that is a lot of guests. Another forum that I am on is much more general in nature and should appeal to a larger audience with more than 1,000,000 members and only has around 1000 guests right now. What are all of those guests doing on this forum?

ETA: Now there are over 3000 guests.

ETA: Now the board is pretty quick and there are less than 2000 guests?

What about migrating off of VB in favor of something like Invision or Xenforo? their forums have other members discussing migrations off of VB6 / VB cloud.

Sounds like a caching issue. Could be the database too, of course. I haven't played with vBulletin, which DB does it use?

Look at the run time for the queries. Find out which ones are killing you. Some of these subforums are huge, even loading them must be a burden on resources. Some (or maybe most now) people have "all time" as their load selection - too many of those in OT or handguns for sale will bring it to it's knees. Any inefficiency at all in those query statements and it's game over.

If the queries can't be optimized, then it might be time to prune or fork. Prune to 5yrs history in OT and 3yrs in for sale forums. Fork anything older to an "archive" subforum.

I'm just spitballing, maybe the Okinawa Old Fashioned talking...

I haven't looked at Invision but I have looked at Xenforo.
Unfortunately there are no importers from vB6 to Xenforo, I would have to find a third party who would be able to create an importer.
I have looked at SMF as well and it's the same problem, no importers. I'd have to convert to something like phpBB and then to SMF.

I would not be surprised to find the problem is in the database. There have already been issue with the db that have had to be resolved because of vB Cloud's 'customization'.

I agree it has the characteristics of a db lock contentetention issues. Don't know much about mysql and nothing about vbulletin but on sqlserver there were tools to dump a list of open db connections and see which connections had locks and which connections were blocked waiting for locks. Mysql should have diagnostic tools to inform your dba what might be needed.

Mysql also can support having a master and read only slaves to help with locking issues. I recall reading in twitters early days they used mysql and had tens of millions tweets in an instance but they were using mysql with a master and read only slave servers. With the pattern of forum usage most requests are read requests so shunting read only db requests to a slave secondary server helps most users request latency issues.
