Search Sucks

I am sure this had been brought up before but why the limitation on the number of characters in search? If I look for CZ, or 220 or Sig or DAK I get no results. I know that's not true and it's very annoying.

the search db is hosed. Right now it only works for 4+ letter searches. Kestryll said he reset it to 3 characters, but the entire db needs to be re-indexed, and it will slam the website while that occurs.

I happen to be one. Can you run the index starting at midnight? It only needs to be run on the title and content columns not the entire DB i imagine.

Personally and somewhat professionally speaking I don't see why we should be asked if we can bear the down time. There's a problem, it requires down time, it needs to be fixed, and we'll all benefit when it comes back up.

This will give us all some time to explore OTHER outlets for our discussion needs and perhaps only add to the content when it comes back up.

the search is soooo bad, search the word "search" to find this topic.. and you get 10 pages of seemingly random results now, shockingly, it is up near the top of results.. but 10 pages?

I have even tried to search for a specific YHM product... good luck with that one also

Respectfully, vB is okay (especially considering its PHP handicap). MySQL on the other hand . . . not so great for fulltext-style searches.

Google Custom Search

Anyone have good luck adding this to the Firefox 3 search bar? The search button does not "glow" when on the search page, indicating that it does not recognize it as a valid search engine to add.

Also, I've not had luck using the link on the custom search page to add it to iGoogle homepage. Anyone tried this?

And I agree that the search should be integrated with calguns.net. Maybe after sorting out the above problems with the google custom search, it could be embedded somehow, since it seems to be more useful than the current search engine? Thanks.
