    Calguns.net Posting

Is there any future thought of allowing members to delete threads they create? And also change username or delete account? Seems like there's a rash of postings in the market place of sold threads which still appear in the search. Allowing the member to remove them would greatly increase SQL database size and speed up queries.

Easy enough to hit the alert button and request a delete, whether as topic starter or interested reader. I've found moderation here to be pretty efficient and responsive to member requests.

I've been on forums for many years, moderate a couple and own one and I've never experienced a forum where members are allowed to delete discussions at will. Generally, once published, the content is the property of the forum owner. CG is quite liberal IMO in allowing members to go back and substantially edit postings and titles for quite some time if not forever. That in itself has content risks, especially with trolls or disruptive members or spammers.

AFAIK, they could create a member group for marketplace only which allows functions like deleting threads but I doubt they will. My pet peeve in Marketplace is one starting post then hordes of 'TTT' bumps. Yikes

One of the forums I work is the same size as CG, though it has about twice the members, and the main slowdowns are database backup and mods running member background inquiries like IP cross-checks. Else, lightning fast, even with hundreds of thousands of soft-deleted (invisible to the membership) posts. IIRC, it's running 3.8.8.

IMO, a Marketplace mod, or one of the 20 or so listed for the forum could easily sweep that forum daily and clean things up. Likely wouldn't take more than ten or fifteen minutes. Post a policy so people understand what's happening then plow through it. However, even when cleaning it up, there will always be people going 'hey, I wanted to keep that to use it later' or somehow feeling their typings are sacrosanct. There are always naysayers!

Seeing your join date, welcome to Calguns!

The Head Janitor is looking into newer software.

Currently at least, deleting a sales or trade thread deletes the I-Trader rating, so that would be a problem to keep up our personal Marketplace "credibility".

Changing username is by request, contact Ivanimal or Kestryll.

IDK much about computers, but it has been previously stated there is plenty of memory on CG.

Last time someone wanted their account deleted, they were told they could manually delete their posts one at a time, but that member had thousands.

Not sure if that helps for now, but things are changing, details TBD.

        7) Edit the title to show your items have been 'Sold'.

Once you have sold the item(s) in your classified ad that you have in the Marketplace, edit the title so it's obvious that the item(s) have been sold'. Do not create a post just to say your item is sold. The moderating team does not delete threads simply because a transaction is completed, so please do not ask.

One problem is that it's not incredibly obvious how one actually goes about changing their own thread title. Most people click the "edit" button on their post, don't see the option to change the title, and give up, not realizing that you have to go to the advanced edit mode.

As a result, we end up with a LOT of marketplace ads that aren't clear the item is sold until you open it and read it. And then you get a frownie face of disappointment.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

Deleting a thread deletes all the posts in the thread. That's OK for your posts; software restricts deleting other people's posts to mods.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

The marketplace is a valuable history. Has been discussed, hashed out, and argued over many times in many threads already. There are several reasons why they are left, including itrader, moderating disputes, etc. Ebay doesn't let you delete your auction listings after they complete either, think about it.

Users can request a super mod to change their username, which may or may not be entertained.

Not sure when you were last a sql/web guy - but SSD, CPU, and memory are cheap and abundant now. I don't notice any problems, and I'm here a lot and very performance sensistive.
