could Calguns tech problems be a POLITICAL attack and

WTF does "vBulletin" have to say?

Why is Calguns the ONLY website I know about that has ANY issues? I'm not that WWW savy but AFAIK if you use some fairly big time program/service like vBulletin it CAN"T not work, and you are sorta locked out from screwing it up. Just like you can't "break" Microsoft Excel or Word, etc, and you can't make your new Toyota fail smog as long as you put legal store bought gas in the tank.

What sort of things COULD be the problems?

TBH, if not for Calguns I wouldn't know that in 2025 there could be such a thing as 'on line forum with ongoing tech issues'. People getting censored off Facebook, Twitter or even 4Chan, sure, but not just "tech issues" of the whole site that aren't some sophisticated outside hacker attack.

Being as Calguns is rather political, could it be some Commie low level infection, just enough to make the site slowly but surely shed users???

I have no clue to what's going on with this site. I participate in another forum (automotive) that's on VB6 and it runs great. Bear in mind, it's not as large as CG (500K post, 18K members).

Right now that forum: There are currently 90 users online. 3 members and 87 guests. (I'm one of the members).

Meanwhile CG: There are currently 7166 users online. 144 members and 7022 guests.

Now that's a LOT of guest users, but the site seems to be running OK for them moment.

Given the anti-gun/anti 2A crowd, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the CGN site is under attack, and the "users" stats seem to be reliably unreliable at best, but on the surface, it does appear there are a LOT of "guests", and if they are not from "around here" geographically or philosophically, those "guests" might be mucking things up a bunch and need to be walled off so the legit users can utilize the site.

There's another CA gun site that is doing exactly that, and their stats indicate that many "guests" are being kept OUT... guests that probably would be sucking up resources, pushing out legit users and generally being detrimental to the site.... hmmmm.

As far as software being "unbreakable".... not really.... I've helped many sites sort out how they broke things and get 'em "unbroke". Right now I'm fighting with Mr.Softy and their new multi-Factor Authentication protocols that have pretty much broken my entire email handling system, and had me locked out entirely from my email for a couple of hours over the weekend... I'm watching as companies scramble to put on "security features" that are very likely creating MORE potentials for security breaches.... software is easy to screw up, sometimes even on purpose!

It's been trash for almost 3 years, due to lack of maintenance and poor decision making.

I don't put it out of the realm of possibilities at all. Considering many techies are Liberal minded it wouldn't take much to hide code that puts a wrench into things. On the other hand, not upgrading when upgrades come out causes problems too especially if its been a decade or more since upgrading. Backward compatibility is built into consumer products, an old word document can still be read if it is converted, but does that happen with other types of software? All those patches needed to make the DB readable in a 2012 upgrade on top of the patches needed for the 2016 upgrade on top of the patches needed for the 2020 upgrade, it doesn't take too much of an imagination to see the problem. "...which from their verbosity, their endless tautologies, their involutions of case within case, and parenthesis within parenthesis, and their multiplied efforts at certainty by saids and aforesaids, by ors and by ands, to make them more plain, do really render them more perplexed and incomprehensible, not only to common readers, but to lawyers themselves. Doubt it.

Don't attribute something to spurious conspiracy theory when following Occam's razor for an answer would clearly reveal apathy or ineptitude is likely to blame.

A car site I participate in is 4 times larger in number of posts and members and runs perfect on VB6. Screens, posts, messages, never a stall or timeout and the site has been around 2 years longer than Calguns. They went through all the same upgrades without any loss of archives or functional failing.
