If I shipped my barrel in one box and the rest of the firearm in another is it legal if I send it to a non FFL? Last year I shipped my over/under in 3 pieces in the same box to a non ffl but I'm sure that was probably not kosher.

The frame or receiver of the firearm is still a firearm, even if you remove the barrel and stock. Shipping a receiver or frame is legally the same as shipping a firearm.
That said, there are some situations where it is legal to ship a firearm to a non-FFL.__________________
