    Current REAL ID status

Can any of you FFL's provide current information regarding the status of the REAL ID program?

I currently have a license issued in Dec 2017 . This was issued prior to the enacting of the REAL ID standard.

If I am interested in purchasing a firearm will I need to bring additional documents?

As my legacy ID doesn't expire till 2023 will I need to go and get a new REAL ID?

I know that new regulation begins in Oct 2020.

    Any help is appreciated.

It's pretty simple. Does your driver license say "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" on it? If so, you need one of the following: 1) valid passport or passport card, 2) certified birth certificate, 3) Department of State certificate of birth abroad, 4) foreign passport with visa an I-94, 5) birth certificate from US territory, 6) Certificate of Naturalization, or 7) green card. This is from 11 CCR 4045.1.

If your license doesn't say Federal Limits Apply, you either have a Real ID-compliant card for which you went in-person to DMV to apply, or you have an old drivers license issued before Real ID was available. Either are acceptable by itself.

I went on Monday (6-15-2020) morning about 10am (no appt) waited in line for about 20 minutes then sent to another line for about 15 minutes, I was then escorted in sat in a chair for another five minutes.

Then it was to the clerk while she did her work scanning and processing, handed her the $37 and I was out of there.

Something that wasn't mentioned. Make sure your current address is on your DL if not a lease or car registration or some utility bills will work. Really depends on the store Turner's said they wouldn't take my lease, go figure. The saying "patience is virtue" is very true.

If buying a handgun, bring the additional documentation of proof of residency. The acceptable documentation for proof of residency are listed at https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/dlrfaqs#14G
