I've heard tales in the CCW threads that it's taken people up to 2 months for a Volreg to get into the AFS. I've only done a Volreg 1 time. I was given a pistol from my dad when I was 19 years old. Couldn't do much with it until I turned 21 but I had it. lol.

The DES has two different listings, one for .40S&W and another for 10mm (and 10ga, which is odd). It might get reduced to one in the AFS, but the DROS is the issue.

I am not sure that the manufacturer could be corrected with the one change, but perhaps.

The DROS, that I see are stored in AFS, so the record that DOJ sees is the AFS entry. In AFS .40S&W is 10mm, ironically I had to clear this up recently, as a Full Access CLETS user I actually do firearms entry for my Department as part of my side duties; and CLETS will give an entry error for the 40 differentiation (it doesn't accept punctuation when it is entered and probably the reason it is broken down to the overly simplified 10mm designation).

EDIT: Of course this is specifically for the LE side of the system; as we use the DROS return to properly enter stolen or lost firearms.

@kemasa, Kel-Tec P40 in 40S&W DROS'd as a H&K P40 in 10mm. Correct SN, so the two errors are manufacturer and caliber.

Since there are NO pawn shops in my area that handle firearms, considering drive time and cost, it seems like volreg is the answer. Would I just interlineate the form to indicate I'm trying to correct a DROS error and/or do I need a cover letter explaining it?

That caliber is correct, in AFS the .40 S&W is considered 10mm.

Ok, yeah, that is a problem.

There are two problems. The first is that the correct firearm was not DROS'd, but then the second issue is that they think that a different firearm was.

I called the CA DOJ and they said that you need to go to the dealer to get it corrected. They would need to submit a form to cancel the old DROS and re-submit a new one. One problem, which they said could be worked with is that the firearm does not appear to be on the certified list. The person I spoke to at the CA DOJ said that should not be an issue, but you need to get it resolved to ensure that you will get the firearm back. This should correct the problem with getting the incorrect firearm removed as well.

I think that more details are needed to make sure that there is really an issue.

What manufacturer was listed vs. what it really was?

What I don't like about the Volreg is that it takes longer. Pawning does cost more however. Ex: A $5.00 pawn would be $1.00 interest $5.00 ticket writing, and the $4.00 firearms fee So basically $10 bucks plus DROS. Basically the same cost as a PPT. I think the $10.00 is fair enough to cover my time to handle somebody else's F up. There is another issue also, should the situation arise where a pawn customer fails NICS checks we are required to immediately turn that firearm over to our local PD. So be sure what you are doing before you do it. Also we can be influenced by beverages, alcoholic and non..........

Pawing it would "clear up" the problem. We've done it before for people.

Sometimes people don't realize who the actual manufacturer is since the name it goes by is actually the importer. The manufacturer should be listed with the location, as well, if it was imported, the importer will be listed with the city/state.

Just do a volreg if it was not obtained via SSE. Send in the form, a few photos of the gun showing the mfg, caliber and serial, and a note explaining why you are doing the Volreg (because you want to correct the record).

If the gun was obtained via SSE, then do a pawn & pawn redemtion.


What kind of gun is it? Some import guns take on a new mfg name (the importer) when they come into the country. The caliber I would not worry about unless you plan to add it to CCW. Most guns can fire many calibers with a conversion barrel, sub-caliber insert etc.

Take it to a pawnshop and do a pawn return, that will re-paper the gun in its current state. That's what people did to get SSE guns back to semi-automatic and/or correct the caliber. It would probably be a good idea to contact the shop ahead of time to make sure they understand what you're wanting to do.

Hey gang. Just discovered that a firearm purchased in 2010 was DROS'd with not only the wrong manufacturer but also the wrong caliber. (Model and serial # were correct.)

I have my copy of the DROS with the wrong info and the Turner's invoice and "checklist" with the correct info.

Is this something I can do myself via some form similar to BOF-958? It looks like the answer is "no" because that form requires the dealer's signature and they made two mistakes, but a Sheriff's Deputy told me I could do it myself if I could wait five months.

Turners was unclear about what to do when I called but said I have to bring them everything including the pistol. Sounds like it will require another 10 day waiting period which is a bummer since they're a 45 minute drive now which means I'd spend three hours in the car.
