    Sac County Boys Ranch Closing

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. -- A ranch for juvenile delinquents in Sacramento County is closing its doors.

The Sacramento County Boys Ranch will shut down over the holiday weekend after county officials cut its funding to help plug a budget deficit.

The 150-acre ranch north of Rancho Murieta provides academic and vocational training, therapy and other services to young male offenders, most between the ages of 15 and 17. The boys can also ride horses and experience farm life.

Ranch officials said since its opening in 1960, the ranch has kept many inner-city kids away from the neighborhoods where they got in trouble and helped them find alternatives to a life of crime.

Young offenders will now be sent to juvenile hall, where officials say they do not have access to the same types of rehabilitative programs.
