Yea definitely... I've been doing a lot of thinking about it.. it's really not that big of a deal to me. after reading the post that retired wrote, yea there's way more to it that draws me in. Especially being able to do something as profound as what he was able to do for that 3 year old...

in a way I think this is good that people tell me to consider my motives even deeper. I thought about all the reasons I want to get into LE, all the pros and cons. And then I took away all the pros, and was left with just the job without those "perks" and asked myself if I still wanted to do this job.

I realized that at the end of the day, without all those perks, when the job was stripped down to the menial, mundane, and difficult things, I still knew without a doubt that serving in Law Enforcement is all I want to do.

I appreciate all your suggestions and advice. I'll spend a lot more time thinking about this, and going on ride alongs. Wish me luck. Thanks again!

project870, just so you know, I was responding to your friend's comments and the resulting responses from the leos. I think (and hope) you realize the red flags you sent up propmted the type of responses you received.

I would like to believe your responses to that were serious and you realize despite what someone like 360PA stated, most of us join le for the exact reasons he said we don't. IMHO, if anyone joined just for the ability to obtain items a non leo cannot buy. I would think and hope it was a miniscule number of people.

Your last response seems like it is a sincere one.

Thanks. Actually every one of my responses were one hundred percent sincere...

It's very understandable that some red flags went up from my asking those questions... after seeing some of the responses I went to bed thinking about it and realized how foolish I may have seemed asking just those questions. But in no way at all am I considering Law enforcement because of that issue. I am only asking, ONLY because I'm trying to understand the full scope of what it means to be an officer, on and off duty. I'm a strong supporter of the second ammendment, and it matter to me, but not as much as a career in LE.

clearly, if I was just in pursuit of obtaining the things that civilians can't have in california, I would without a doubt move out of state. I just phrased the question badly in that first post.. I had a lot on my mind at that time..

But really one of the things that brought me to this was the fact that all my peers are working towards business and engineering, which are all great, extremely high pay, but at the end of the day they go home and all they can really say is they designed a new phone or plasma screen tv for the company to sell. I could never live with myself if that was all I had. I feel like Law Enforcement is one of those careers that are on the other end of the spectrum. I honestly don't care about the money at all, my family was raised on less than 40,000 / yr single income salary. I only hope for enough to feed my wife and kids in the future. But, retired, what you said about what you were able to do for the kid, things like that have always motivated the major decision making in my life.

How many is too many? I'm currently looking to become a Level I reserve and I have quite a few guns (around 12). I could care less about what LEOs can buy, as long as I have high cap magazines in my duty gun, because I know 10 round limits do not apply to criminals.

If you get into law enforcement thinking you're going to get job satisfaction or see something tangible out of your efforts, you'll be sorely disappointed more than satisfied.
I care, for reasons too numerous to list.

Doesn't sound like you are either. You make blanket statements that are broad and inaccurate. Anyone with any law enforcement experience knows better than that.

In 31 years I've seen may come and go. The ones who get in it for the wrong reasons don't last. Many commit suicide. It's too emotionally draining. And to think you can't make a difference is the first step to failure. You may not be able to change the world, but you can change one persons world.

Like 'Retired' said, there are things that stand out in my mind, from saving lives to finding a kid's stolen bike and giving it back to him, to surviving firefights where you are outnumbered (and outgunned) 3 to 1. I saved four lives in one day from a burning car, that one definitely stands out.
