We used to call the SPC insignia sham shields.

Still in common use although the more skilled individuals are known as Shamurai (Sham + Samurai) and are not limited to E-4's to attain that title.

They retired those ranks in the 80's it was essentially to show the different between a Specialist (ha ha) IE enlisted expert and a leader (Sergeant). As my dad explained it when he was AD within his section as a SPC-5 he outranked a SGT but in the field the SGT outranked him.

If he outranked the sgt in the same section, it wasn't because he was a spc5, it was because he had time in rank on him. I was a spc4, spc5 and when I made e6 it was ssg.
