There is a problem here. The replacement guy would be sort of appointed by the DNC, not chosen in the primaries. This re-opens a pandora box of the unfaithful elector problem. Also, this move will be so non-democratic for a Democratic Party. While they solve a momentum issue, they create a bigger long-term situation.

I don't think it was the plan. Joe was their best hope to beat Trump and they tried to stretch it out. Alas, the old horse stumbled bad. Now, they are in a real trouble. Replacing Joe is a slippery slope, while keeping him in the race will lead to a fiasco. None of the options is good for them.
