    Dual residency.

I go back and forth between living at my fathers in AZ and CA. Just bought a home in ca. But I still have my az ID and a car registered there. I kind of roam, for school and fun back and forth, especially since my last home in ca burned down. But I am in CA more. Am I allowed to purchase firearms there and keep them there in the other residence? What about bringing them to ca if they are compliant? Or do all gun purchases and possessions have to remain in ca?

You must follow the gun laws of the state you are physically in. As long as aren't importing an illegal (AW) into CA your fine, I am not aware of a single item illegal in AZ that you can buy in CA.

Long story short, you can only buy guns in states that you are a resident of. You can have more than one state of residence. That should be enough.

For long guns, some states have reciprocity. In fact, I'd be surprised if an AZ resident couldn't buy a long gun in TX or NV. CA residents cannot buy guns anywhere else (03 FFL I won't go into). If you have residence in both AZ and CA, as an AZ resident you may have reciprocity with other states.

Excellent, so I can have every Californians dream guns as long as kept at my residence down there.

And can take anything legally purchased down there that meets ca law back to ca with me.

Example M14 with high cap mag purchase there. Leave high caps there, bring m14 back, install bullet button if I desire adding evil features.

Doesn't sound like you are an AZ resident to me...

More info needed to be sure as the OP isn't very clear.

Doubt you can buy in CA with an AZ Driver's License.

I know people can have a CA DL and also another States ID Card and have heard they've been able to buy guns in the other State with the ID Card. Maybe it works the other way around too.

I am a ca resident no question. DL, house in my name. The question is am I legally an az resident too. I have an az id, car reg, and house I go reside at between school breaks in ca. I guess the question now is what technically makes me a resident there? I may go back there permanently after school. Back and forth. Idk.

Here is what the Feds say about residency for firearms purchases.

State of residence. The State in which an individual resides. An individual resides in a State if he or she is present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State. If an individual is on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces, the individual's State of residence is the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located, as stated in 18 U.S.C. 921(b). The following are examples that illustrate this definition:

Example 1. A maintains a home in State X. A travels to State Y on a hunting, fishing, business, or other type of trip. A does not become a resident of State Y by reason of such trip.

Example 2. A maintains a home in State X and a home in State Y. A resides in State X except for weekends or the summer months of the year and in State Y for the weekends or the summer months of the year. During the time that A actually resides in State X, A is a resident of State X, and during the time that A actually resides in State Y, A is a resident of State Y.

Example 3. A, an alien, travels to the United States on a three-week vacation to State X. A does not have a state of residence in State X because A does not have the intention of making a home in State X while on vacation. This is true regardless of the length of the vacation.

Example 4. A, an alien, travels to the United States to work for three years in State X. A rents a home in State X, moves his personal possessions into the home, and his family resides with him in the home. A intends to reside in State X during the 3-year period of his employment. A is a resident of State X.

Well I'm sure that covered it. Let me pull out my compass and protractor and figure which one I fall under.

Since you own a home in both states, (they can't be rented out since you have to reside in it) you would fall under example 2. As long as you can prove residency in AZ (your AZ ID should be all you need, but having a utility bill in your name will help), you shouldn't have a problem. Several people here have done just what you're asking with only the utility bills for proof of residency.

Just make sure you follow all CA laws if you bring anything back.

As others said. Stay compliant when coming back to the communist state. I know many others with a house on each side with their actual dl in the state of California and their ID in az.

Ok cool thank you. May do it or may just avoid it to be safe. I'd hate to find out I forgot one detail and was now an arms trafficker or some stupid deal like that.

This won't help much for state laws but it does have some federal firearm laws
