Ammo purchase question - bogus BG check ?

I bought some ammo from a new-to-me LGS and I'm trying to figure out if the guy made an honest mistake or I'm being jacked around.

The first BG check was denied/rejected, which surprised me. The LGS guy said it was because I didn't make a firearm purchase this year. All I've bought this year was ammo from the same LGS earlier this spring/summer. What exactly is he talking about? He ran the BG again, saying that it should go thru but would cost an extra $20....I was still taken off guard by the denial so I just kind of went with it.

Looking at my copies of the BG checks when I got home -

BG check #1 (the denial) says 'Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check' at the top and my race was entered as Asian - I'm not Asian

BG check #2 (went through i.e. noted as 'in progress') says 'Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check' at the top and my race was entered correctly on this one

Did LGS guy make an honest mistake by getting the race wrong on the first one, and not catch it, or am I being played for a measly $20? I also don't understand the discrepancy of the first check saying 'Standard', and the next one saying 'Basic' -- unless that was done on purpose as well to cause the denial.

    ?

'Standard' and 'basic' are different kinds of checks.

    See https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/apap and
What is the difference between a Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check and a Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check (single ammunition transaction)?

    The StandardBasic
Now, "firearm purchase this year" is not the issue, so that was a mis-statement. When the 'Standard' check was submitted, it seems it found no record in AFS of you buying a gun in CA; but a record from a purchase in 1993, or a New Resident Report anytime (and some other things), would have created a record in AFS.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

^ Thanks. So what I take from that is -- I wasn't in the AFS system for some reason, even though I've bought plenty of firearms in CA.

Is AFS something new for this year?

Heavens, no! Might have existed in some form since 1924 or so, when docs actually called Dealer's Record Of Sale were required to go to DOJ in paper. (for handguns bought at CA-licensed gun dealers - no-paper transfers were legal until 1991)

Any handgun purchase documented to DOJ since 1998, and any long gun purchase since 2014, have been electronically submitted to DOJ and populate an AFS record.

Something in what was submitted to DOJ is different from what is in AFS for you. Have you moved since you last bought a gun? That would be a CFARS thing to change.

I did move last year, and ran into a BG check snag at this LGS when I first bought ammo from them earlier this year. So perhaps it's this.

But my thinking is, wouldn't the first hiccup have rectified all this, because the earlier ammo purchase was completed successfully after all said and done.

I'm usually pretty up on the current laws, but this one is a little confusing, sorry.

Ammo checks do not add or update an AFS record. Sounds like you'll need the CFARS update.

So would a gun purchase iron this out? I don't really need another, but if something cool came up for consignment there it might be a good excuse.

Yes - that would likely be a more enjoyable way to update your info.

I run these ammo “record” checks all the time at work. I say the problem is that he marked your race as Asian. When you DROS’d your last firearm, what race did you indicate? If it wasn’t Asian then there’s your problem and I would say they fleeced your for $20. He could have rerun the check and corrected the race.

Race does not matter I think. I bought guns and ammo as white, Asian, and Hispanic before.

Can you "indentify" as another race on those forms?
