(School) State Superintendent Who's Who ?

Ok haven't had kids in school for a long while now, so kind of out of loop.

yeah I know, bad on me.

Anyone have a link on Tom Torlakson & Marshall Tuck.

Is incumbent the best choice ? Idk... Thanks !

The core issue in this race is the Vergara case decision.

If you agree with the judge's decision, then Tuck (supports Vergara). If not, then Torlakson (opposes Vergara).

"Prohibit the peasants from owning katanas, wakizashis, arrows, spears, or matchlock rifles. If the peasants are armed, they will not pay nengu (taxes) and they will not be subordinate to the officials."

Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Sword Hunt Edict of 1588, establishing the class division between the peasants (commoners) and the samurai (the governing elites).

Thanks CZ, that makes the decision easy!

As an aside, I like how challenges to education statutes are reviewed under strict scrutiny, and stupid little issues like constitutionally-enumerated rights get stuck with rational basis masquerading as "intermediate scrutiny"

There is quite a bit more to it than that.

Tuck would like to privatize education and turn it into a for-profit industry. He has no experience as an educator, but is a corporate education reformer.

Torlarkson has been in the position for too long and has allowed the states schools to crumble because of how beholden he is to AFT and their cronies.

Tuck, is at least a change, likely for the better... but he's not opposed for more bond measures for schools...

competition is good for every business ! Its why Mcdonalds has as 99 cent menu and why manufacturers develop better products.
Im thinking how better USA cars are since the Hondas and Toyotas entered the market.

competition challenging public schools will be good for everyone, including taxpayers and students who are stuck in substandard schools .
Public schools will not go away but will improve with competition .

            Im voting Tuck .

Meh. Torlakson may have years of experience as an educator, but he clearly hasn't shown any leadership skills. CA schools, once the best in the nation, now ranks close to the bottom, ever since he took office. You either fire the poor performing teachers or keep them on the job at taxpayers' expense despite their poor performance because of union mandated seniority precedence. Simple as that.

The key issue still stands: The Vergara case; which candidate supports it (Tuck), which candidate opposes it (Torlakson). Read the judge's decision.

If you agree with the judge, then Tuck is your guy as his website firmly says he will withdraw Torlakson's appeal of the Vergara case on his first day in office.

If not, then Torlakson is your choice as he has already filed an appeal for the Vergara case. He basically will use our tax dollars to challenge the judge's decision in order to maintain the status quo.

Turnover is key. California schools are an embarrassment. Do something.

Also, replace the name "Tom Torlakson" with "Kamala Harris" and the Vergara case with the Peruta case.

You want the same incumbent who will spend tax dollars to appeal the case the courts have said it's unconstitutional, or vote for the newbie who says I'm withdrawing the appeal on day one in office.

Pretty simple when you put it in that terms.

Or, another way is to look at it is that the CA lottery gave $312 million to California public schools this year (pretty much always shown in places that sells lottery tickets). If $312 million are going to public schools from lottery ticket sales, then why do our schools suck? Where is the $312 million going? Giving ARs to the school police? Enriching poor performing teachers no matter how crappy of a job they do to teach our kids? All of this crap is because of Torlakson. You want change, vote for Tuck.
