Moving to Washington...anything i need to do?

First off...I want to say thank you to all the calguns' members who have helped me along the way. I plan to move to Washington to finish school...I'll be there for about a year and return to California, so I don't plan on buying any new toys...Is there anything I should know about before I drive up to Washington with my CA legal pistols and shotgun? Thanks in advance

Yeah, drop them off at my house!

Good luck up there. As far as I can recall, Washington state outside of the big cities is pretty low restriction. YOu might want to check their website for the state DOJ and see if there is a registration requirement.

Enjoy your newfound freedom! Whereabouts in WA? It's a beautiful, awesome state.

        Yeah..................

................................ Stop by the Sheriff's office of your county of residence and apply for a CCW. It will cost about $60 and is "shall issue" in Washington. They issue to residents and non-residents alike, lasts five years so it will still be valid when you move away.

It's slightly less restrictive than CA.

No machineguns. No SBR's/SBS's. AOW's are fine. Suppressors are fine, but you can't actually USE them in WA state.

No AW laws. Standard capacity mags are legal.
          Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

There's also tons of beautiful scenery and wide open spaces to enjoy, a startling (for Californians) lack of people, and unless you live in Seattle you can get way out of dodge in about 15 minutes. People in WA generally mind their own business (Seattle notwithstanding). Freedom isn't just about guns.

Getting a CCW will also exempt you from WA's 5-day waiting period when purchasing handguns. No waiting for long guns.

One thing not relating to guns is that when you take your driving test for a WA Driver's License you will always flunk the first time no matter what. Guess they don't like people from California moving there. This happened to my wife's uncle. He did get his DL the second time though.

No machineguns or machinegun parts. You'll serve time for merely owning a 1919 parts kit.

Darn it...I'd be attending Seattle University for about a year or two if my current units can transfer. That means I'd probably live in Seattle. What does this mean...No CCW?

Of course not, all you have to do is apply and wait for your background check to clear. WA is "Shall Issue", meaning that the only time that WA doesn't issue is because of something that came back on your background check (prior convictions, domestic violence stuff, etc). And its not expensive, it costs $55.25 (the cost of the background check) and is good for 5 years before you have to renew.

I personally applied at my county's Sheriff's office. I had printed out the application and filled it out at home. At the Sheriff's office, they took my money, application, and a set of prints (on cards, live scan is apparently only for the bad guys at that station) for the background check. Here's the King county website on all you need to know:

You will return to California after a year and a half of being a Washington resident? Then you might consider bringing a pallet of HK 45s back here with you.

I think you have to buy a Subaru or a Prius and drive slow. Seattle traffic is worse than LA.
