I am traveling to the range, so I can carry my shotgun or rifle unloaded and visible, just not through a schoolzone, right? And the handgun would just have to be unloaded in my locked backpack? I don't know how comfortable I would feel carrying an exposed shotgun through San Diego though...

so...just to be ultra safe, would partially disassembling (field stripping) the gun be the best bet?
I only own a motorcycle and will be transporting an su16 from the shop back home soon.
I was thinking that I'd just padlock a rifle case and sling it on my back but apparently this qualifies as "about your person"?
should I field strip it and lock it in a saddlebag instead?
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists. -Hemingway

        any input?

        I'd be on this

I remember walking the streets of Rollingwood, with a .22, when I was 12! No one ever said a word to me.

BTT, I've also slung a long gun across my back and ridden my old bike up and down 101 in SLO County without being stopped.

Both of these were years ago. I'm not sure what would happen now?

Wow, my father grew up here in San bruno by skyline college, I hear many stories from my father and his friends about how much more freedom my area used to have. Now I have nosey neighbors that call the cops for just about anything.

            To ponder,

Now that the USSC has ruled the 2nd a right, how does one exercise that right without driving which is a privilege? Can a right be restricted to the privileged? ;-)

Technically, it doesn't matter whether you're transporting an assembled rifle or just a receiver.

              Don't lose your rifle parts!

No need to disassemble. Just put the rifle in a case, make sure the case doesn't open when you ride so your rifle won't fall out, then sling it over your shoulder and ride to the range. I did this for 15 years when I owned only a motorcycle and rode between San Francisco, with it's gun friendly environment, and Lake Chabot.
