Repealing CA Gun Laws with a Vote?

I'm not terribly familiar with how the political system in California works so bear with me,

I remember back in 03 when they collected 1 million signatures needed to have a recall for Governor. So my question is, there's millions of gun owners in California (from what I've heard anyways).

Couldn't we collect enough signatures to have a measure on the ballet in time for November to have some of these gun laws already on the books repealed with a majority vote?

If so, has this ever been attempted? It seems like the most logical way besides going to the Courts. And we all know how impartial the courts in California are in regards to gun rights.

You want to let the same people who voted for a California tax increase make this decision for you?

The same people who re-elect DiFi over an over again?

These same people voted for Prop 8 albeit barely. And they couldn't get the Marijuana law to pass a few years ago. So it's not impossible. Long shot? Sure, but not impossible. Besides, these gun laws are already in place anyways. I'm simply asking to have a vote to repeal them.

+++++++++++++++++++++1. There are too many ignorant people in this state.
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

There are too many people in this state that just go with the flow. A trend I see here on CG is people quick to shoot down ideas about recalls or getting out to spread the word; because its California. What is that supposed to mean?

There are 33+ million people here in California. Very low turnout for voting across the state. So, if we started an effort of lets say "Get off the internet and Vote" imagine how many votes we would get from just those.

OP, Good Job. There are several of us from here and other places that are working on setting up events to save the state and get voters the right information.

Agreed, we are the minority when it comes to voting.

Exactly, look how the Prop 8 people were out full swing. They managed to get they're prop passed. Of course the end result is a different story. But they accomplished what they set out to do.

I'm I the only one who thinks like this? How many gun owners are there in California?

Maybe, but the initiative would have to be "very" carefully written and directed at a specific law or laws that bring up issues of civil rights or fundamental unfairness. Anything having to do with what the legislature has labeled "assault weapons" or "large cap. mags" would have to be left out because of overwhelming media bias. Concealed carry is also something better left to the courts at this time.

Perhaps the unsafe handgun law would be a good choice. I have found that whenever I have attempted to explain its inconsistencies and downright nuttiness to non-gun owners and even people who have a tenancy towards being anti-gun, they all find the law stupid and even disgusting.

But, the real question is this: When you consider the unbelievable cost of putting a proposition on the ballot in this state, and also the enormous cost of overcoming the lies that the media will unashamedly propagate about the issues during the campaign to pass the initiative, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort in the end. Our money could be more fruitfully spent in other ventures.

That's "referendum" and applies to bills just passed. See the Secretary of State website

Basically, won't work in CA. Not enough people understand what they think they oppose.

ETA - I was posting from my phone, so couldn't add this: please see this thread:

                      We could with no effect.

Rural (by place of residence, exposure on a Boy Scout reservation, etc.) people are more likely to have hands-on experience with guns so we respect but don't fear them.

Urban people are unlikely to have first hand experience so their "knowledge" of guns comes from movies (where one gun can kill hundreds of people without reloading) and other media. The majority of them who are law abiding project that the people being killed are too (while in reality the majority of murder victims are criminals) and logically support gun control based on those assumptions.

Urban dwellers and their population based government representatives out number the rural dwellers in California.

It'd take great marketing to overcome that - a big program involving celebrities shooting and stock piling sport-utility weapons to protect themselves (like the Korean shop keepers did in LA when the police were ordered to withdraw for their own safety) against rampaging criminal hordes might do the trick.

Prop 8 would fail today (thankfully), and a marijuana vote would be very, very close. And remember - medical weed already was voted legal by the population.

You need to get out of Kern County once in a while and spend more time where most Californians live. Right now, you're out of touch.

Lets also petition that makes it illegal and punishible by imprisonment for a reporter or the medai to report anything but actual FACT. They would no longer have the ability to take sides and give their own take or opinions on issues.

Would that be something or what? It would be like FOX news everywhere or as Dems call it, "Liars in the media".

So in other words, let's take a dump on the First Amendment?

                              No thanks.
