Outdoor Shooting Laws?

Does anyone have a link to the rules for shooting on private land? I called the Sonoma County Sheriff yesterday and they said as long as your >150 feet from residences and roads you are OK.

I would llike to get something in writing. I think I will go by the sheriff went I get a chance too to see if they can give me anything in writing.

Somewhat related I was up in Big Bear last weekend with a buddy to do some hiking and shooting. The ranger station gave us a map that showed areas that were designated for target shooting, and what areas were off limits. Of course this is in the National forest, but it looked like most areas were open to hunting, but not to target shooting. We went to a designated target shooting area.

The next day we went hiking up the Castle Rock trail at and the S end of the trailhead there was a sign about shooting. It said that shooting was not permiteed with 150 yards of any road, building, or area where people congregate. It also said no shooting over roads or water. I infer from this that if we were to go 150 yds off the trail that shooting would be ok. I find all of this a bit contradictory.

I finally found the info for Sonoma County in the online county code. Generally 150 yards unless a lawful range or your neighbors are OK with it. So that leads to what is a lawful range? One I could construct or and legitimate shooting range. Anyone know about this? Kind of scary that the Sheriff's department doesn't even know the rules.

besides the county regs, chk city ordnance and the health&safety ordnances of both city and county. For example, the no-bb-gun ordnance some calgun members likes to quote actually came out of a certain city health&safety reg that may/may not be applicable to residents of neighboring cities.

as treelogger suggests, they don't make it easy for the laymen...
