Buy a Remington 700 in .270 Winchester. It's plenty of gun, the recoil is moderate, the ammo is cheap and readily available.

I'd go with the explosive tipped arrows Rambo used to take down the chopper. If you can't find any I guess I'd use a 45/70 or 458 socom.

You can borrow my Marlin 1895 in 45/70 instead of buying a gun for one job.

450 Bushmaster bofore 458 socom would be my choice.

A lever action 45-70 would be great. But if you wanted to go cheaper any 12 ga pump with slugs would work great.

I would make it something that he doesn't have or something that he thinks he would like to us afterwards. If that means a bolt action 30-06 or .270 then that's what I would do.

Personally, I say 12ga pump if he doesn't have one, a .458 socom upper if he wants something cool and has a lower already, or a .270 bolt action if he wants a bolt action. you have A LOT of options though.

The problem with a cheap 30-06 is that they usually come cheaply scoped. I would much rather have open sights for in the house bear encounters.

In all truth I would find someone who hunts and rely on them. Filling a bear full of lead is not needed and can be dangerous to everyone.

One shot one kill......and knowing how to hunt Bears is key if this old guy is that smart.......find a hunter

Pfffft. It's the Bears habitat, these pesky humans need to leave.

We'll just give them the 'ol number 6.

Remington semi auto's in 270 and 30/06 are easy to find and very reasonable in price. Browning BAR's in 300 Win Mag are a little more $ and are around if look for one. 458 Socom's and 50 Beowulf's would be great IF it's something you wanted to own. If not stick to more common deer cartridges.

If he's going to have a showdown with it from within the house, the lamp shotgun is the only way to go. 60 watts oughta do it.

"Buy a 458 upper" for a lower that he doesn't have.....and reload! with components he doesn't have.....

"smart *** bandwagoner comment!" allways so helpful

                              He said he wants a semi;
                              an AR 10?
                              Rem 7400?
                              Browning BAR?
                              Semi auto 12G?

Personally I'd consider using what I've seen people who live in bear country carry. 12 gauge pump shotgun loaded with slugs

I'm still waiting to hear his dad's experience, capabilities, and preferences. Without that, it's just our opinions of what we would use ourselves. There is more than one good choice.
