    Doe down!

Please excuse the crappy camera phone pic.

My first deer! I was pretty excited. Shot her broadside at about 170 yards, dropped right on the spot. I was using my JD Machine PR3, the .308 was pretty devastating, and very effective. I lost the meat on the front right quarter due to the exit wound, but I had to take the shot through tall grass and couldn't see her well enough to avoid the shoulder shot.

She was a very healthy, pretty animal, I felt a little bad. Skinning her was a bit gruesome for a first timer, but I did it without any hitches (took a while though).

I almost got my first hog twenty minutes later standing by the doe. Three hogs came within 20 yards of me, but they were on the other side of the property line and I couldn't take the shot. One of the guys I was hunting with was on the other side of our 1000 acre lease and took a buck that was quite large for that area of Texas. He'll probably score around 130 or so, and our other buddy took two hogs. All in all, it was a productive morning.

Just wanted to share my excitement. Thanks for reading.

Congrats on your first deer! Lots of good hunting in the DFW area and whitetail doe are fantastic eatting. Are you hunting on a lease or private land?

Thanks! I got on a lease about 3 hours west of DFW with two coworkers and one of their dads, so 4 guns total. Tons of hogs out there, and the cameras have picked up a handful of does and bucks, even some bobcats. I'm hoping for one more deer before season ends, then I have the rest of the year for hogs and predators.

          Thanks Jake!

I took the quarters and backstraps to a processor today, getting a few #s of jerkey to try, some "chicken fry" cuts, some meatballs, and the rest in burger meat.

Probably going duck hunting Friday morning too. It's been a good fall so far; at least with regards to getting outdoors and taking up hunting.
