That's really cool. There are few things in life I like better than fishing. -
Looks awesome. Beautiful view that’s for sure."A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

I was lucky enough to be invited onto a 24 foot skipjack from a friend of a friend. We loaded up the boat and launched out of Ventura harbor.

On the the way out of the harbor we stop at the bait barge and pick up a box of squid and a scoop of anchovies. I used my home made bait masher (patient pending and foot not included) to turn the anchovies into a chunky fish stew of sorts.

I load up the bait jars and we fish for a bit waiting for the sun to get low. Caught my first white sea bass (released) and I got a small kelp bass (also released). Sunset was beautiful.

We get to the spot and it is carpet bombed with commercial traps. We go to another spot and it is also carpet bombed with commercial traps. Some of the commercial buoys are painted black so it was hard to see them until you were on top of them. Since the water was damn near flat we decide to try our luck and thread our way through the commercial guys buoys and toss out some hoops. At this point I knew our odds of success are slim to none but might as well give it a go. We put out our string of hoops and make our way out of the mine field of buoys to fish some more and enjoy the fantastic conditions.

After pulling and resetting hoops until 1AM we ended up with one short lobster and a dozen rock crabs.

The claws on these are pretty good size compared to their body size.

Yummy!

My OP area working SAR in the Coast Guard.
I never tire of looking at the islands, the channel and the islands bring me peace.
Used to maintain the lighthouse on Anacapa too after it was fully automated.

You guys gotta go hoop where they don’t allow commercial trapping. Figure that out and it’s wide open. That’s the best hint I can give you. Victor Franco you keep quiet and dont let the cat out of the bag.Last edited by deckhandmike; 12-16-2021, 1:07 PM.Comment

The only reason I don’t hoop is because I don’t have a place to store nets except my ( attached) garage. I passed on a 10 trap deal 2 years ago for $350.All promars with all the extras.Still kicking myself.Great post Op, don’t see many bug reports here.Comment
