Any of you fly fisherman use the double-haul?

Just to let you all know, the great park in Irvine has casting ponds with loop targets.

When I do the haul I create a tailing loop, and it crashes into the rod tip. Any ideas?

It's all in the timing. Wait until the rod begins to load before hauling.

Yeah, it looks like they are just calling it a reflecting pond now off of parking lot 1. All of the casting hoops are in the water and there is a platform. I'll ask next time I go by and will verify.

No one needs a spinning rod.

If he's "casting it out, reeling it in" and needing distance it sounds like he has saddled himself with sub optimal tackle for the type of fishing he is doing.

You see that a lot in neophyte fly fishers.

Rather than choose the most effective tool out of the all they have mastered they choose a fly rod as if it was the fish that was the tool and fly fishing cred was the objective.

I do fish a spin rod while I'm up there, but enjoy the fight of a silver salmon on a fly rod. Is it the optimal tool for putting food on the table? No, but that's not my objective.

Do you break clays the way you do because "having fun" was the objective?

Or did you make a conscious effort to pick up your game?


The way a fly rod rejects energy in order to cast limits it on heavy offerings but locks in "Champ" for the light stuff.

Once that dynamic is broken you would be better off with different tackle.

A streamer won't break that dynamic though,
why don't you just give it a little flick of the wrist as it lays downstream like everyone else does?

No casting hoops, but I had fun. A park ranger stopped by to make sure I wasn't using a hook. He said the ponds have a liner, and the hook would tear it.
