Getting started with deer hunting

If you don't have an experienced hunting partner to show you the ropes and are willing to spend the money, a guided hunt is a good way to get started. I don;t know any paid guides but others might.
Start off with a map of the deer hunting zones.
Deer hunting info from the CA DFG web site.
The tag drawing opens on or about April 15 and I think it runs into early June. Results are available around the third week in June.
The good new is, deer are harvested in California. The bad news is, harvest success rates are low because there are lots of hunters competing for a limited number of animals. The only thing I've shot in California is ground squirrels. This is the first year I'll be making a serious attempt to get a deer here.
Where do you live in the Bay Area? I'll be in Palo Alto the middle of April and again in early may and would be happy to spend an hour or two adding to your confusion. My regular e-mail address is in my profile. -
If you are looking to pay a guide your best bet is out of state. Your best bet is to find a solid group of hunters to join , it a tall order but succes rats on public land are dismal. 90% of the deer are killed by the same 10% of the guysComment

True that
Most hunters come out on the opener, see the other million hunters and don't come back till the next year, if at all.

Its your time and $$ but for my $$ its outa this worthless deer hunting state.
The bros who say get with some experienced hunters are correct, both in and
out of Callefornyuh. If you find F & G regs a little heavy, try understanding why F & G treats hunters like they do when getting wrote up for Bull szz reasons. Have you been to Hunter Safety courses yet? That may or may not
give you some help with the regs.
