Shovels are fun but those are little guys. Next time use a whole squid and see if you cant get ya a bat ray. I caught one over 100 lbs in Newport bay yrs ago on a bass rod with 20 lb test sadly no pics. The bat rays can at least be eatin if you choose. What bay were you at and where were you fishing? Almost looks like a barge to me. Anyways, its always great fun to do a little bay fishing and keep it up. one tip if you go to this spot a lot would be to pick up an umbrella net. It would be great for lifting those guys up and probably safer. They are reasonably cheep and you can use it to catch bait with the net and a slice or two of bread. Cost is around $20-30.

Yea we had a guy snag a 50lber bat last week. They couldn't even get it on shore. They had to cut the line and let it free. Ive tried half squids, but the little guys just nibble it to nubs or rip it off and run off.

Helps me monitor the pull of the fish and how much drag it's taking while I watch the tip/line movement. Also it's on because while we're using the jig rods while this sits in the corner. With out it, the pole would probably be in the ocean cause we wouldn't hear/see the hit. #2 almost pulled it in, I caught it just before it flipped over the chain lol

I don't get why so many people hate the clicking, to me that is fishing. "We're ganna need a bigger boat"

Sir, reach down and turn the cliker off. Place your reel in free spool then place your rod n reel against the chain with the clicker on. The sound of the clicker will let you know you're bit. Simply turn the clicker off when enjoying the fight.

OP are you eating these catches? And as others have already said turn the clicker off. Also if you are in OC there are some much better spots for surf fishing than LB

Nice catches man. Glad you had fun. For future, never pull on the fishing line, unless you are wanting to loose the fish. With the shovel nose sharks, you can lift them up by their tails. The skin is very gritty.

You are probably talking about a thornback stingray, which this is not. Just a small sized guitarfish/shovelnose shark.

OP, last I checked these have to be 36 inches to keep. They can be very delicious but you HAVE to know how to clean them properly. Bascially you cut the head off, and keep the tail part. In the tail part, you will see two loins that have two uric veins, and you will have to carefully remove them prior to cooking the loins.

We catch and release everything but legal size cooda, y tail, halibut and bass. The occasional sculpin when we hook a fat one. But I have heard they can be of good eating, but seem like a lot of work for little meat and we are more for the catch than the food.

Thanks. I just told him grab the line because I'd rather lose the fish that watch my dad grab the tip of my rod and break the tip when the fish tries one last run like he did with one of my rods previously. Luckily it was a junker pass down. But lesson learned.

If you have some local spots you don't mind sharing, feel free to PM me. Always open to other anglers recommendations and tips.

This is on a private beach/property, and less than a mile from my house. Which is why we frequent this spot so often.
