    Place to shoot Altamont Hills.

Hello all, a few years ago I saw an add for a place to rent for the day to shoot, Somewhere in the Altamont or Livermore Hills area ? Anyone know if that is still available or how to get in touch ? Thanks and take care .

There used to be a site along Mines Road before the junction to Patterson, used to be called "Jot-Em-Down" in the '60s, had a little bar & grill of the same name, the Williams Ranch headquarters was across the road if no one was at the tavern. It burnt down some time in the '70s. The last bear in Alameda County was killed there. 10K acers of roads, hills and a creek, some abandoned mines. For a dollar you could get a day pass or for 10 bucks you could get a seasonal pass, go shooting or four wheeling. My folks would drop us off on Friday and pick us up on Sunday before I got my license. I actually saw a 4-point buck there during deer season just as shouldered my .303 Enfield milsurp. Biggest coastal deer I ever saw. Everything was shot to pieces, dry, hot not much shade. Only 2 decent camp spots back then along the creek and more than a few rattlin snakes, but it was the first time we were let loose solo with our guns. Now days, Rainbow Junction is on the southeastern edge of the original parcel, near Dell Puerto Canyon Road and Mines Road intersection. It was built after the burn. Jot-Em-Down used to be in the middle of the property, west of the creek at the base of a steep cliff. The bar/store was the usual affair with antlers, fish trophies and the afore mentioned bear skin. I think the bear was taken in the '50s. The Williams compound across the road and up the hill a bit had dead cars, backhoe, a mill other abandoned mining and logging gear. The lady who ran/owned the place, I don't recall her name, was in her 90s in the '60s. The last time I was shooting there was 1968 (?). The drive through to San Jose takes you to MT. Hamilton and the Lick Observatory then drops in by Alum Rock Park. The last time I was on that road, MT. Hamilton, 4 cyclists going downhill at full speed, hit an MGB coming out of a turn. Killed 3 of the road bikers and one in the MG. PAX
