Coming from a guy who spent 9 weeks in National parks hiking I can tell you that using TP is the worst choice for long term non shower times. You are much better off (sorry for the too much info here) using water and washing things off. Just fill up a water bottle and pour it over your tailpipe like they do in Europe.Last edited by problemchild; 04-26-2011, 11:46 PM.Comment

Sports bottle bidet? LOL. Gawd that sounds like a total flip thing, you ever ask your wife what the deal was with the tub or bucket next to the toilet in most flip housholds? Exactly what you described... buttwash...
If I'm doing long term grungy, I'd rather do wet wipes and air dry by going commando. Call me crazy, but I'm not fond of the idea of any leftover buttmud...Comment

Oh you aint heard nuthin yet. It was winter and the water was freaken COLD! I had to melt water to get things flowing. You have to do more than pour the water. Best off pouring water on your hand first so things dont stick.Sports bottle bidet? LOL. Nothing like melted snow to increase the pucker factor. Tried the wipes they just smear things around.
Dont mix up your drinking bottle and washing bottle, not good!

You live near San Luis Obispo and you're not worried about Diablo Canyon?? And for our Long Beach / 91-freeway folks, there's always the dirty-bomb-in-a-shipping-container scenario: http://www.rand.org/pubs/technical_reports/TR391.html (BTW this report is very interesting and worth reading even if you don't live in this area)[...] I also can't imagine anything that would drive me away from my home, even if it was badly damaged in a bad earthquake. If it's a fire and you have to flee, well all you have to do is get away from the fire area and find a motel or a camp ground, but even then, eventually you'll be allowed back in your area. Things will have to deteriorate to a point of no return before civil unrest gets so bad you have to flee, but then...flee to where, for what? (Not asking you, these are questions I ask myself). At that point, I believe we'll have enough advanced warning over time to make better preparations than bugging out on a moment's notice. Foreign invasion? Not likely. Zombies...all they want is a little love...
I think the worst scenario is financial collapse where markets and gas stations are no longer useful, and we may even face utilities failing. That could get ugly, but I don't think for a year and we'd be no better off in the boonies.

I think you'd definitely be bugging out for those situations. Are those things as likely to happen as say an earthquake or massive fire, probably not. But are you really willing to bet your life on the fact that it won't happen and not at least consider how you'd react?
I do agree that bugging out is not practical in most situations for those of us who live in large metropolitan areas.Last edited by Rumline; 04-27-2011, 3:40 PM.Comment

I live in knowledge not fear. Chances of thisgs like that happening? Sure. That may be one scenario, but we're a LONG way from Diablo and the prevailing winds are in our favor. Besides, what do I do, grab a bag and run? I never said I wasn't prepared to bug out, I just don't agree with most of the scenarios that people "bug out" to in their imaginations. You live near San Luis Obispo and you're not worried about Diablo Canyon?? I don't think you'll have water to waste on hmm clean up. Believe it or not we have at least a years supply of tp. We're close enough to walk to the ocean for baths although a fresh water rinse would be preferred. Just got a case of matches. Almost everyday we think of something we hadn't thought of.Comment
